I'd say it's 40 to 50 db, it's office quiet, I wouldn't try to sleep with it in the same room but it's definitely not bad at all. I've had louder switches actually, like a 48 port Dell 5448 that was louder...no joke.

thanks for the info - i think i will pass until I have a dedicated server room
They aren’t quiet. They do have noise vs heat control and calm down after a bit. You have to keep in mind that they are designed to run in a data center as a top of rack network solution. I wouldn’t want one on my desk while watching a movie or playing video game.

As a follow-up on the general subject of this thread: I just put in my 3rd order with @NATEX and I've been very pleased with the experience. Packing of the first two orders was excellent, the equipment was in very good condition - especially given the price - and Pam did a very nice job resolving a customer service question I posed to her over the last couple days.

thanks! yeah, not a knock on your hardware or anything just doesn't fit my usecase which is way outside of the scope of what they were designed to do, I know that now.

Good luck with the sale.

The LB6M is a long way from being quiet. I wouldn't want to be talking on the phone in the same room with one. Those 40mm fans are the curse of enterprise IT stuff.

Just got my lb6m from @NATEX and it was packaged very well. I will set it up later on tonight. One thing I was impressed about with this switch is that it is much more quiet than what I was expecting. I have a 40gb infiniband switch that freaking screams compared to this. It may be more quiet than my lb4ms. I am very excited about having this thing up and running.

With regards to my last comment i will agree if it were staring me in the face it would be pretty irritating due to sound level. Thats why I "sound proofed" the room i keep my racks. I was thinking about doing a small project that would baffle and fan out the heat for the switches in my rack just for fun. Mdf box with a labyrinth like port with a slow moving fan pannel above it lined with rockwool. Box mounted inside the rack and switchs mounted to rack but slip inside of said baffle. Should work pretty well. Might try it when work slows down.

The fans on the LB6M is ridiculously louder for the air it pushes. There are silent fans that can compromise between decent air flow and noise. The 3 main fans need to be 40 x 28mm 4 pin PWM+Tach ones for the main board to read them as operational and not failed status. The ones on the power supply need to be 40 x 15mm 3 pin PWM. Anything that has a decent air flow and about 30 db will be a good swap.

The X520-DA2's are showing up at $78 instead of $68. I need three of these. Also, do you guys have a coupon for the E5-2670s? I need a pair of these. I'm also in the market for either 16 8GB sticks or 8 16GB sticks of RAM that would work well in a Supermicro X9 board, if you have any coupons or deals for that.

Any update on the DA2's? I'd like to order at least that and maybe a pair of CPU's...

I guess I'll just have to order them on Ebay from someone else. I've tried calling, but Pam didn't answer and no voicemail was available. So I'll give it the rest of today and then my impatience will get the better of me...
