I'm trying to make a QUIET and tower-based server for my house, which I am hoping to keep on a budget as well. Right now I have:

Supermicro X8DTL-3F motherboard
2x Intel L5639 CPU
24Gb DDR3 10600 ECC RAM
5x WD Se 3Tb drives
4 port Intel i350 NIC
IBM M1015 HBA

I want to put it all together into a quiet ATX tower case, preferably with hot-swap so I can see drive failure indications, and keep it next to my desk. I am also concerned with power usage but haven't seen a E5 system I can gut and do this with (just yet).

My other concern is cooling - I have the stock Supermicro 1u heatsinks on it, but do not know if there's an option for adding a fan - or if I just need to spring for a LGA1366 compatible cooler and hope I don't run into spacing issues.

I put a dual x5670 in a corsair case, used two of these:

Amazon.com: Intel E97381 / E97381-001 / E97381-002 / E97381-003 Socket 1366 Cooler: Computers & Accessories

Good heatsinks, cheap, and have a blue LED which everyone knows makes your system run much cooler.

I like those coolers. I think i was just holding on to the idea of the stock coolers since I originally had to buy them when I was going to put all this in a 1U case - but they just need to go.

What case did you use? I have seen a handful out there but haven't seen many reviews of them.

I read OP then immediately googled the motherboard... sure enough, 1366 dual processor and ATX sized!!

The motherboard is fun to look at with the size and ram setup going on :)

I've run a similar setup - dual 5520 on an asus z8na-d6c board in a fractal design xl case. Used noctua heatsink and fans. Could barely hear the system when under full load. No hotswap drives in that case though.

Get at least one fan in the front blowing air over the iohub heatsink (the grey heatsink near the pci/e slots), they get really hot and could affect the system stability.

I have it in an old Corsair Obsidian 800D. Those things are built like tanks and will last forever. Not sure I'd use it as a workstation case these days since it lacks USB3, but for a server it's perfect.

Sometimes I think that I should go with Z10PA-D8, just because of a case choices.
Personally I'd go with Phanteks EVOLV or Caselabs BH7. In my case it will be placed on the table and I don't mind a little bit of show-off (dual CPU ;-P).
