From Ebay listing
2x CPU- Xeon E5-2603 (version 0?) , $5 each or $0 if are you using your own CPU
1x MOBO - ASUS Z9PE-D16 , may be $100 - $125
2x RAM - Kingston 4GB (each) DDR3 1066 KVR133D3D8R9S/4G , $5 each to be generous
1x SSD - Samsung 830 128gb , worth $10 to $20 , may be $0 , because I used my own. Too small to be useful

Heatsink fan, I place $0 value for used heatsink fan with unknown working hours.

Case and Power supply worth $0 when you are paying $140 for shipping.
For $140 , I buy a nice case and PS that I like.

At this late stage of v1,v2 CPU, if I have $300-$400 , I look for e5-v3 system.

Thanks Marsh, so now the truth :p, this guy is about half an hour drive from so he's actually local enough to negate the shipping, he posted it for $500 on CL about a week ago so was trying to figure out what to offer for a deal.
Was thinking to offer $300 and see where it landed or would low ball at 200-250 be better?

More data:
I'm looking for a unraid core to toss in a norco 4224 eventually ~ the case included with that isn't a bad stop gap till i get over 12 drives though, up to 10 atm just chilling on top of my half rack in fractal design enclosures I pulled from my R5.

I'm running a pair of R420's (I want to EOL/sell these, they loud AF) for my compute currently that have 12x16gb ddr3 in them that I can reuse and from some recycles at work a pair of e5-2643's (maybe even some 2690) is why I'm looking at the v1/v2, don't particularly want to go ddr4 yet either. Additionally this made me think I could grab one of the 20$ pike cards off the bay and then combo with my 3x H310 that I have for all the drives (eventually grab some expanders to replace, but free is free for now), a quatro p600 for hw transcode, and then a dual 10g connect-x3 card leaving me with one last slot for a 2308 card for ssd cache/direct ssd for VMs. Planning to load it up with ram for plex transcode ramdisk and all my other misc docker containers.

Now you have the whole story hows that sound :)?

I have been running that D16 on my main rig for years now, its rock solid. One time I was reaching back behind the case and pushed in on the Audio stack and I heard a pop, the system was off, so I figured I popped the stack from the MB. Sure enough I had no audio after that. I did get a SoundBlaster card which I love over onboard audio.

2x E5-2699v3's, 256GB RAM, RTX2080 Ti, Intel Optane 900P 480GB boot drive, X3 Pro 10G.
Its a beast, it does everything and all at the same time LOL

If you are local, not paying the $140 shipping.
If you have use of the computer case.
If you like to stay with v1,v2 CPU.

Offer $200 to $250 high end rage. The only part is worth any money is the ASUS board.
I really doubt that any person would buy the whole setup online and pay $140 shipping.

Your plan to stick with v1-v2 is very sound.

FYI,
DDR4 memory is not expensive anymore.
In the past couple of weeks, I am going broke buying DDR4 ram.
16gb DDR4 stick ebay BO price is $45 each, add the 10% coupon, it becomes $41 each.
I must have brought over 32 sticks.

V3 CPU price is very reasonable now. Retail E5-2678 v3 or E65-2680 v3 is around $150-$175 each.

Good to know, thanks Marsh I'll shoot'em a 200 and see what he says.
Meanwhile look into v3 board options while waiting :D.

Also I appreciate the solidity insight william, cheers!

Last year, I migrated off the ASUS dual Z9PE-D16 board to a single CPU V3 system due to high energy cost.

My secondary desktop system is

1 x E5-4667 v3 retail chip ( 16 cores x 2.9 ghz all core turbo ) , paid $85 Ebay
Asrock X99 OC formula , Asrcok X99 board accepts DDR ECC ram . paid $110 off ebay.

1080TI purchased before Crypto hype.
Couple of Intel P3600 SSD.

I forgot the power consumption, my best guest is idling at less than 100w.

The guy says he decided to just part it out and sell it all on ebay .
Now that I calc it out I could get by with under 100g of ram though, so 8 ram slots can get me that easily, so I can work with a single CPU system.
One of the folks here on the forum is talking about parting out his SM 2U v3 setup in FS, I'm gonna see if we can work something out for the core of the system.

I appreciate the recommendation Marsh as well as all the other system notations fellas.
I'll do a build log once I start parts coming in and such :).

I'd agree. That pricing is too high. Maybe to some people it's worth it, but if you're reading on here @Marsh has a good recommendation. If you don't have that Norco, I'd just browse 24-bay 4u or 36-bay 4u Supermicro ebay listings. Supermicro makes better cases and rails. I've had both and there isn't a competition. If you can find a nice V3 server, it's easy to get cheap CPUs.

The SM system that you are looking at is very nice. Price is very fair.

A 2U Case is too small for me though and wrong drive form factor, he notated he was potentially going to part it out so I’m hoping for that.

I appreciate the recommendations and notations on the SM quality, which I’ve seen first hand. I’ll evaluate the modding again though and calc out expected costs.

I still fairly set to proceed with the norco for the ease of silencing capability while maintaining reasonable drive temps. I’m willing to sacrifice some on build quality for it.

If I get to the point where noise isn’t my top priority (ie new house with a dedicated server room vs me nearly sitting on the enclosure) I’ll definitely be grabbing a SM case for replacement. I know there are mods and options, but the amount of work/effort or additional cost for quieter parts to avoid modding is heavily favored in the Norco, the SM are really airflow restrictive around the hdd.
