After a long time speccing out a long overdue homelab upgrade, a 3 node Harvester or Proxmox + Ceph cluster based around the EPYC 4464P and either an ASRock AM5D4ID-2T/BCM or MSI D3052(D3052GB2N-25G), I noticed a new "Preliminary" motherboard appear on the ASRock Rack website; the W880D4ID-2Q.

I think I have more research to do regarding the Intel P/E core architecture I would be adopting by using this board's compatible CPUs (although this video suggests any up to date kernel should just magically distribute my workloads in a mostly optimal way), but regardless - the ITX form factor, low TDP CPU options, built in dual 25Gbps NIC, and enough OCuLink/M.2 for a reasonable number of U.2 drives makes this a very attractive platform to me!

Has anyone else been eyeing this up yet? Does anyone have any experience of what exactly "Preliminary" means from ASRock's perspective and what timelines may be involved?

Mind that AsRock Rack 'ID' boards are NOT mini-ITX: They are an essentially proprietary form factor which does not fit in strictly mini-ITX cases, and may well require a micro-ATX case to fit the extra depth—at which point you'd be better with a genuine micro-ATX board and its 2-3 PCIe slots.

As for the time line from "Preliminary" to "available at retail", I'd hasard: Anything from "6 months" to "never".

Deep mini-ITX just a little longer
case for 120/170W TDP cooling are usualy bigger, and if you want to use a huge GPU...

Yes, familiar and happy with their deep-ITX size. I think one of the main attractions of ITX in terms of width is the ability to fit a double slot PCIe card in 1U, which in height constrained racks like mine could prove handy. That being said, chassis that support this in terms of their I/O cutouts are few and far between.

This week, I visited the RSA conference in San Francisco. Asrock had a booth there, and they said this motherboard should be released between August and October 2025.

No word from any resellers I've contacted yet, but the board has been out of "preliminary" on the ASRock Rack website for a couple of weeks now, and the accompanying manuals/support lists have been published also.

I saw one of the online vendors list the board for sale at ~540USD, but no stock yet.

Lol, every visit to that site is an adventure...

Just had a quote from a UK reseller, £375 ish (excl. VAT). ASRock opening orders in August as mentioned above. I'm thinking of going ahead with using as a platform for a 3-5 node Talos/Ceph cluster, 5 NVMe drives and dual 25Gbps networking on each node could be decent. Shame there's not been any SFF EPYC 4004/4005 boards with quite enough PCIe lanes to do this as I really liked the CPU options compared to Intel's Core Ultra (Series 2) SKUs.

Reddit: ASRock Rack W880D4U-2L2Q :

formatc99:

FWIW, I've been exchanging emails with someone in sales at Asrockrack regarding this mobo. Not sure what Intel driver she's referring to that only this board has, but she's saying the 2L2Q may be a while before it's available, but the W880D4ID-2Q and W880D4U should be available in August. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
It might take longer than 3 months for W880D4U-2L2Q to enter MP, based on the current release schedule of Intel driver.

based on the current release schedule of Intel driver.
Has the developper been made redundant?
Anyway, Intel seems to be working very hard to convince its users that EPYC4000 is better. I trust that they know what they do…

Reviving an old thread but I noticed W880D4ID-2Q just made it onto Newegg's website, albeit at $549
