By the way another great deal that doesn't seem to get any traction for some reason: Supermicro H11SSL-i Server Motherboard $300

In europe I used to be able to source Supermicro motherboards from lambda-tek, and I ordered one in November (big question mark on whether I will actually receive it, still waiting). Supermicro announced earlier last year (2025) they stop selling components, only full servers. And I noticed today that lambda tek has removed pretty much every supermicro motherboard from their website. So these will become collectables!

I totally missed this announcement, but I saw this article that is dated may 30 2025! Ooooooffff...

Well, thanks for telling us I was in the dark personally... sad news, very sad. I had purchased workstation boards off NE just few years ago... Bad times. I wonder if it'll ever go back to how it was after the bubble...

I was going to say that H11SSL is a bit overpriced for my taste considering it's Gen 3 only. I totally missed the SM announcement. Guess that H11SSL is cheap now

There is the MZ31-AR0 for 299 euros if it can be flashed to support 7002. Issue is it's risky and the cost of the risers will negate savings. But it has 16 RAM slots.

There is still the huananzhi board for 360 now (was 317 almost a month ago)

Well the following generation (7003/H12SSL) was released in early 2021, so it hasn't come out of warranty yet, but it will starting this year. So we should start seeing H12SSL appearing in the used market, and they should normally depress the price of the older generation (H11SSL rev 2/7002), just like the generation before (H11SSL rev1/7001) is depressed vs 7002.

So in response to @iraqigeek I think $300 for those motherboard is cheap now but I expect to find them for $200-250 by the end of the year (unless the AI bubble finally collapse, then it will be springtime for us!).

Used CPU prices tend to collapse more than motherboard or RAM prices for some reason.

I don't know if I trust those huananzhi boards yet. I have a non-posting MZ32-AR0 that I haven't figured how to RMA to Gigabyte, and having dealt with SM and Asrock support without issues, this leaves a bit of a bad taste.

To admit something: I'm quite motherboard rich ATM, besides being RAM and GPU rich I snagged every good board deal I could find locally and on ebay during the past year. I wasn't very sure how I wanted to setup my homelab for LLMs and figured I could sell them again at cost or with a slight profit once the dust settled. Now I have the feeling I should hold on some of those as supplies dry.

This is utterly crazy. Can't wait for the AI bubble to pop.

Hot take: most won't decommission their SP3 systems anytime soon, because what will they replace them with? DDR5 prices are through the roof and with most DDR5 platforms being 12 channels, this makes upgrades very expensive at current prices.

Warranty might be running out, but without a replacement in sight, many won't have any other option. Saw something similar during the financial crisis in Portugal when businesses kept running really old servers because they couldn't afford to upgrade. One place I worked at was running 9 year old servers before they upgraded, and it was a large financial installation!!!

I paid 250€ for my H12SSL in late 2024. I have a H11SSL that cost me 80 because the VGA connector is half ripped off the board. I don't care since I use IPMI anyways. Might try to solder another connector to replace it since the board looks undamaged (SM PCBs feel like they're bullet proof).

If it wasn't for the bubble, I'd say an H11SSL should be in the 150 range by now.

I’m not upgrading from Milan anytime soon…ram prices make such an upgrade utterly indefensible.

The H11 series is Gen 1-2.
Gen 2 requires the revision 2.x of the board.

The H12 is Gen 2-3
Gen 3 requires the v2.3+ BIOS version. Updating an older BIOS requires a Gen2 CPU.

Be careful to check versions when buying these.

You only need the BIOS upgrade if it is a 3D cache model, i.e. the models with an "X" suffix (7773X, 7573X, 7473X, 7373X). And even then, you might still be able to update the BIOS from IPMI (not sure about that).

That's what the main products specification says.
There are other product support pages that say all 7003 series require the newer BIOs.

I went with the more restrictive statement, since I have seen plenty of situations similar to this.
