I am eyeing on EX3300-24/48P and this is going into a confined office. No separate closet or server room so I am wondering if anyone can shine some light in the noise of the switch?

Thanks

I would put them on part with other 1G + 10G switches out there in terms of noise. The PoE version are going to be a bit warmer and louder still if you are powering devices with them. I have had them in my 8x12 office many times setting them up, but it is nice to get them out into the field or down in the basement and have the whine of small fans go away.
If you have them next to other 1U/2U servers they will probably sound similar, but if going into an environment w/o that noise already it will be a big jump.

The Juniper ex2200-c's are totally fanless and blissfully silent. If you don't need 10G and are not doing a lot of management changes I would go that route as they have most all of the same features just in a smaller and silent form factor. They are not too bad to pick up used, just be warned the CPU for the management interface is SLOW so it takes what seems like forever for them to boot up and get going with Junos. I have one on my 2nd desk as the "lab" switch that lets me setup vlans and isolate things as needed but it just chugs along w/o bothering me like the 3300's downstairs.

I was looking at the EX2200-c too but that one does not come in 24 port. I also need this rack mounted because I have a wall mount for the patch panel and the switch. I have 14 cameras to power up and about 9 stations/servers to feed.

In other words, you would not recommend putting this in an office? The server I have is a tower server with very big fans so it does not make any noise

What about EX2200-24/48P? Are they a huge step back from the EX2300?

They are great switches and I highly recommend them in general (I have about 10 across sites for work, bought new and from eBay) it is just they are not quiet. For 14 PoE ports you are going to need something with fans anyway so I would say pick one up on eBay and see how it works out for you, if it is too loud you can turn it around and try sometime else.
The last ex3300-48P I picked up I want to say was ~750 but I was patient and trolling eBay for quite a while with search on ex330's < 1k to pick them up.
If you have enough space for 2U of equipment, you may be able to find a 16 port PoE switch / power injector that is more silent, but I don't have experience with any offhand.
The HP, Juniper, and Cisco PoE switches I have used are all on par in terms of noise.

I just read on the Juniper site that EX2200 are recommended for open office. With only 38 dba it sounds pretty quiet for office usage. But I am uncertain on the features on EX2200.

I guess what to you need to do with the switches besides power 14 cameras? Lots of VLANs? Any L3 functions? Multicast support? 10G ?

if just a basic managed PoE 1G switch then they are probably fine.

It's not a complicated setup I have going on at this office. Just a few VLANs and no L3 functions. 10G is a huge bonus but not required.

From the ex3300 sheet http://www.juniper.net/assets/us/en/local/pdf/datasheets/1000389-en.pdf
Model Acoustics Noise (DBA)
EX3300-24T 45.2
EX3300-48T 41.2
EX3300-24P 45.4
EX3300-48P 42.8

And the ex2200 sheet http://www.juniper.net/assets/us/en/local/pdf/datasheets/1000307-en.pdf
Model Acoustic Noise in DBA
EX2200-24T-4G 32.7
EX2200-24P-4G 37.2
EX2200-48T-4G 33.5
EX2200-48P-4G 38.1

So a solid 10dB difference. For nothing complex the 2200 should be fine for your needs it looks like from the sheet. I only have used the ex2200-c's not the full-sized models. If you get it used there are lots of them on eBay all the time so easy to try and rotate out or up to something down the road.

I have an EX3300-24P and once it's powered up, it's relatively quiet, significantly less noise than any of my servers. With that being said, I wouldn't want it sitting beside me long term as the hum does get annoying after a while.

IIRC, people have modded EX3300s with quieter fans. I was going to, but they ended up being quiet enough for the one case where I cared.

The EX4200s, on the other hand, are *loud*.

Thanks guys, I went with EX2200 as it is significantly quieter on paper haha. We'll see how quiet it is
