apple shares and windows shares

As the title says...

I have a network that will have these two types of clients. I am not FreeNAS savvy and wondering if CIFS/smb is best for this combo. I plan to add a Linux box later on so will the CIFS/smb option work with Linux?

I use both AFP and SMB. SMB does not play that nice on Mac in my experience.
