Anyone have a single L5640 machine around?

Hi all,

I just wanted to see if anyone happened to have a Xeon L5640 machine single CPU looking for something to do. It has a higher clock than the D-1528 but is four generations older. If so, a Linux-Bench run (Ubuntu 14.04.3 LiveCD) would be much appreciated.

I have a lot of them all over, this is our go-to CPU for storage. Just a single CPU, not dual?

I have one of my students prepping the machine now and will start the run in a half our or so.

Thanks! Single. It turns out (preview info here) that the D-1528 is pulling sub 60w for the entire platform with a single SSD which is less than the TDP of a L5640.

Funny you should ask that.
I have 2x Intel X7560 – 8 core + HT – Nehalem-EX, 2.26GHz 130watt here that a guy sent me to throw up on eBay for him... long story on that.

Yeah they used to use these on Skulltrail and SR2 platforms and overclock them I believe. Nice chips but way out dated now.

Do you want a dual CPU run as well or do you have that already?
I think this works. I wanted to make a comparison between a L5640 (Westmere-EP 6 core/ 12 thread 60w 2.26GHz base 2.8GHz Turbo) and a Xeon D-1528 (6 core/ 12 thread 35w TDP 2.2GHz). I did something similar last year with the D-1540 and dual L5520's.

The entire D-1528 system is running in a lower power envelope at the wall than the L5640's TDP. Certainly if you added a dual 10Gbase-T NIC to a single L5640 system you would end up with at least double the power consumption of the D-1528. Plus you get SATA 3 and PICe 3.0 as well.

Finishing up the benchmark charts for Monday's Xeon D-1528 benchmark piece:

Looking at all of the benchmarks, 4 architecture generations indeed do seem to outpace the ~300MHz clock speed advantage of the L5640, and in some cases bring 6 core Xeon D very close to dual L5520's.

How does a 4 Core L5520 do better than the 6 core L5640 with same base clocks, and turbos even a bit higher and is 1 year newer tech?
