I have been working a lot with Magny-cours over the past few weeks. With Interlagos (AMD's next-gen 16 core CPU) around the corner, I thought I would consolidate some information in a thread.
First off, the Magny-cours architecture is built on a 45nm process and is essentially two Opteron 4100 "Lisbon" CPUs melded into one package. Lisbon comes in four and six core varieties making Magny-cours packages eight and twelve cores. Furthermore, where Lisbon utilizes dual channel memory, Magny-cours is able to take advantage of quad channel memory (essentially two channels per incorporated Lisbon core.)
One of the biggest changes with the Opteron 6100 series, aside from the core count, was the introduction of Hyper-Transport 3 which alleviated a lot of the bottlenecks that plagued the Opteron 8000 series.
Looking forward, the G34 platform will support Interlagos so whereas Intel is discontinuing the LGA 1366 platform's use on new processors in the near future, AMD is using a socket with an easy upgrade path.
