Amd EPYC 75F3 in dell r7515 operating temperature

Hi guys,

i am wondering, if everything is ok when dell R7515 which is located in datacenter with intake temperature 23°C and idrac says that CPU temperature is 75°C.
It is running Esxi 6.7 latest build and stable. OS Load is about 10% by idrac.

But my Q is , are they designed for temperature that high almost idle? Max operating temperature by specsheet is 100°C.

I know its almost 300W TDP cpu, but i am little bit concerned because this is kind new experience :) ( Havent had any newer processors since haswell/broadwell, and they when had to with full load in DC didnt come more than 70°C)

Please increase the fan speed, high temperature will make your CPU work at a lower frequency

I just did that lowest fan speed by pwm is 60% and thermal behaviour high performance cooling. Will see, for now temperature dropped by 10°C to 65°C in average.

I will investigate at thursday what is happening there because in rack next to it there are the same servers which have same load and temperature less than 60°C

Which fans do you have in the 7515? It is also kind of unusual to have a milan CPU in a 7515. I had a 7525 with 2 milan 7763s and the temps were mostly in the 40s without much load. The 75f3 is a pretty unique CPU as it clocks pretty high. There is also a thermals menu in the bios/idrac that should be adjusted if you haven't already.

R7515 are commonly offered with milan ;) since release in april.

Dell could not manage to get me 7543 month ago so they offered me this one for the same price (i actually put a pressure on them because of short deadline).

Heatsink is standard, and 750-AAWT : High Performance Fan

Thermal menu is high performance cooling.

Not sure why they they didn't use high performance heat sinks. I currently have a 7525 with 2 x 7413 milan cpus which are not as high tdp as the 75f3 and even that one came with the hp heat sinks. the reason that I was curious about the 7515 with the milans is that one of the reasons that folks are using the amd chips (at least from the rome series) is pcie gen4. both for nvme and nic card support of pcie gen 4. I think dell only started to support that with the xx2x series. ex 7525 and 6525 not the 7515 or 6515. In either case, the 75f3 is usually about $1K higher in price so you got a pretty good deal! Either one should have come with the hp heat sink (at least with the 7525) and should also idle at a much cooler temp.

Obviously i completely missed that ... :D so when you want drives, you will bake cpu. Will try to have talk with dell engineering team, if there is some way to manage better temps.

I recently purchase a 7525 from dell that has 2 x 7h12 cpus but only the 1U heatsink. It is a special L shaped heatsink but also has the high performance fans. the idle temps are still in the 40s C. dell is kind of cryptic with their part #s and since you have the 7515 I am not sure if we are comparing the same thing. On mine, it does mention the 6525 heat sink since that server is 1U. the 7h12 is also a high tdp cpu and it is using the 1U heatsink in this config. It has 16 x 2.5 sas/sata and 8 x 2.5 nvme so it is using the 24 x 2.5 backplane config.

curious as to how this turned out. dell support has been pretty good so far for me.

That is the point.
So far no ticket created, just spamming engineers because of curiosity :) Anyway. Flir showed only that everything is ok. (sorry for shitty quality but that flir does not take pictures better :) Intake below 27°C. Out less than 40°C.

So far negotiated with eng presales to try load more than 50% to try if that server go more than 80°C.
"That these servers are designed to have temperatures same as in load and in general to have temperature bit higher". (*cough* *doubt*)

Will see next week.

Okay, had some time and did 15min stress test during less production time :)

VM with 32cores with ng-stress test. Idrac showed 98% cpu utilization, esxi same.

Idrac pwm speeds 100% 20k rpm. (would not rather to be in the rack at the moment)
Temperature did not rise above 86°C.

Started thinking that the system is truely designed to not waste power on cooling when almost idle.
On the other hand, what if the stress would run more than 15minutes. Fan speeds were maxed out.
