Am I wrong in thinking an Optane 905p had a power backup ..?

And also, is there a way to use about 10 NVMe (U.2) drives for a TrueNAS device
... that uses low power when it's not in use? I know sleep mode is faux pas...
And the EPYC cpus (as AWESOME as they are w 128 PCIe lanes) aren't "low wattage."

(hopefully I won't be harangued for wanting to make an NVMe TN array with special vDevs)

Yes, you are wrong. Optane 900p/905p does NOT have PLP (power loss protection).
And, no, there aren’t any U.2 enterprise NVME in the market with „low power idle“. They are made for low latency’s and not for homelaber‘s dream of electrically efficiency

Optanes don't have plp by design (read the main site post about optane if you're interested in details)
The cheapest and smallest were 16gb m.2 ssds (new)

enterprise nvme are fascinating powerhogs, guessing some gen5 will improve on this, both at idle, and under load

m.2 seems way better than u.2 though

I second this. Start on the main STH site, and read about optane. They don't have nor-need PLP.

HGST SN200/SN640 include power loss protection. (most microns also have it.)
