Hi All,

Looking for some advice if possible on a CPU. I currently have a 1x 8C|16T E5-2648L @ 1.8Ghz in my GA-7PESH2 Motherboard and the machine is running ESXi 6.5 U1 with a Fusion IO card for Storage.

Anyway. I have always noticed that VM performance is not as fast I would like it to be and have seen the CPU spikes of 100% at times, I am not a heavy VM user it mostly idles during the day but I think I would benefit from a faster base clock and if I could get more cores then bonus!

So I decided on the V2 CPU range as they are more modern than the V1 but alas more expensive..

Now I picked up a E5-2650 V2 Local for £70 / $90 Which I thought was a good deal , this comes with a 2.6Ghz (3.2) Ghz Turbo again 8C|16T CPU but I can't help feel I should have got a faster one?

So here is (finally) the question:

Given my use case scenario is the E5-2650 V2 a decent chip or should I sell it and but a faster chip?

E5-2660 V2 - (£110 | $130 - Slower Base Clock 2.3Ghz 10C|20T CPU)
E5 -2670V2 - (£150 | $180 - Same base clock as the 8C|16T 2.5Ghz
E5-2680 V2 - (£170 | $200 - 2.6 Ghz |10C|20T
E5-2690 V2 - (£280 | $330 - 3.0 Ghz | 10C | 20T
E5-2696 V2 - (£400 | $450 - 2.5Ghz 12C|24T

The main use case is ESXi 6 I am not too fussed at the moment about only running one CPU as I think that is enough for a HomeLab but looking for some advice on whether by E5-2650 V2 was a wise choice?

Or should I just sell it and buy one of the above CPU's

e.g would I get much better noticeable performance by buying the one with more cores?

I think the 2690 V2 and the 2696 V2 are both out my price range some how lol but really appreciate peoples opinions based on value | Speed | Bang for Buck | Performance

Thanks all!

I think you will be happy with that upgrade. If it lasts you 12 months many of those CPUs you list will cost half as much.

Thanks for your reply Patrick would you say in that case then that this is a capable processor on it's own or should I invest in a matched one to go with it with a view of upgrading in a year?

I am new to the world of Xeon as always been a Core i3/5/7 person before

I would say just use the 2650
Single core performance should improve a decent amount (~50%) which is probably the most important thing. (And in total I would expect it is double the performance under heavy load)

2680 V2 would provide the best price/performance if the 2690 V2/2696 V2 are outside of your price range while providing 10c/20t.
I ended up snagging a 2680 v2 on here for £150 / $178 was quite impressed with that will sell my 2650 v2 and 2648l now

Congrats on the 2680v2 purchase. I would going to say that if you hadn't already bought the E5-2650v2, then an E5-2680v2 would be the one I would pick. The 2650v2 is no slouch either though, you'd probably be fine with that.

To use the turbo feature, make sure to set the power profile to high performance both in the bios and in esxi. Otherwise you might have issues with that, not working.
