I've seen many adaptec 31605. 16 port RAID 6 capable. I know they're older, but are they still worth getting? They look like FH only.

    Good/ bad?

simply looking at specs, that's a pretty impressive controller for the money.

Why? 16 ports for a storage server isn't bad?

A 16 port card that supports 2.2TB+ drives for ~$100 is excellent (I think so anyway).

The one issue I see is that it is only 3gbs not 6. So would not be great for SSDs

I am a bit torn. The Big WHS which was pretty much how STH got started used two Adaptec 31605's. They worked reasonably well until...

At some point, I moved away from these controllers and on to mostly LSI-based systems. By the time I went to sell them, neither worked.

BTW - thanks for the thread. It allowed me to go back in the STH archives and see how much progress has been made in the last 5+ years.

One really nice thing about the Adaptec Raid/HBA cards that the LSIs completely lack - support for spin down of drives. Really wish LSI would support this. I've been very careful lately to downsize the power required by my servers. But with 30ish 3.5" drives spinning 24 hours a day it's hard to get it lower. My disks currently draw more power than my servers...

Considering they probably get accessed no more than an hour a day total this is ridiculous.

Note: Areca raid/HBA get spin down right too.

Spinning drives down is one of the things I really like about using Snapraid instead of more traditional arrays. With direct access to each individual drive I can spin them down regardless of the brand of HBA. And as I also need only intermittent access to files, when I do need a file it only spins up a single disk. Only during nightly sync/scrub jobs does the entire array have to spin up - and you can customize that schedule based on your needs.

+1 I love this about SnapRAID and a pooling solution for home use as well. It works well for home bulk media storage.

these seems to have a bit of problem connecting with some Hitachi 4TB hdd. the connection is somehow downgrade to 1.5Gbit ;(.... also they are limited to 3GBit. so only good for spindles. but they sure do handle a lot of spindles for cheap....
