Hello all, first post!

I recently scored some parts from various scrapped workstations. I am getting the final parts I will need to put the build together. As the title says, I've got a Supermicro X9QR7-TF+, four E5-4657LV2, and a 748TQ-R1400B.

Given that this is a workstation build, I am hoping to use active cooling (fans, but if necessary, water cooling), but don't see any options listed for the E5-4600s. Can I use the recommended active heatsinks for 4U/E5-2600 series CPUs such as the Supermicro SNK-P0050AP4? If not that, any other active heatsinks a possibility? Do I need any additional wiring if so? I've looked at the heatsink matrix provided by Supermicro, as well as the motherboard's user manual but haven't found any definitive answer.

Also, if an active heatsink is supported, are there better choices?

Thank you!

E5-46xx are socket compatible with E5-26xx / E5-16xx (LGA 2011). I've also used Dynatron 2Us in my SC216 chassis for E5-4650 V3 (2011-3) QS. SNK-P0050AP4 will work in workstation setup.

Awesome, thank you!

Side question, does E5-46xx being socket compatible with E5-26XX mean that I could, in theory, put E5-2697s in a X9QR7-TF+, to test if they work? I have also inherited a few of those and am contemplating throwing together something with them, but only if they work.

It ‘may’ support only 2 x E5-2600 cpu, have to check the manual

The manual didn't mention any processor series other than E5-46XX. I had just assumed that it would not support anything other than the advertised CPU line based on that.

Thank you!

@ Evan - AFAIK, the SM Dual socket MB documentation does not list E5-16xx (can only use 1 cpu if some one goes this route) or E5-46xx. For example, I've 2 x E4650 v3 QS chips in X10DRi-T4+.
But they do specify TDP limit for the board.
