Thanks for mentioning 430-8i, is it straightforward to flash these into IT mode?In one of my systems i have lenovo 430-8i and its fine; but some people had problems. *(they are cheaper option)
9400 & 9500 is Tri-Mode onlythe 9300-8i is the least power efficient, the 9400 and 9500 series is a lot more efficient.
430-8i is 9400-8i *its just lenovo oem card that was discarded.9300-8i it's taobao
Those reference-design white-box variants from china are perfectly fine, especially for non-critical home, test- or standby servers. Never had any issues with those (or similar whie-label NICs etc) in 15+ years...there are fakes, but mostly located in china, and california. As long as reviews of the user are positive, and not set in china i'd say you would be good on ebay.

And? As far as I know, nothing prevents from using a Tri-Mode card as a plain SAS HBA for SAS/SATA drives only.9400 & 9500 is Tri-Mode only
I did have issues with counterfeit intel nic's, and old 9200 sas controllers. In short they were much older chips sold branded and overclocked as newer models. Those reference-design white-box variants from china are perfectly fine, especially for non-critical home, test- or standby servers. The failure risk of branded or OEM 'used/refurbished' cards is at least equally high, if not higher, especially if the environment in which they were used is unknown.
Thats right, they are still sas controllers. The tri-mode itself is a feature name that refers to support of sata/sas/pci.And? As far as I know, nothing prevents from using a Tri-Mode card as a plain SAS HBA for SAS/SATA drives only.
It's just an HBA so already in it mode, but it's very easy to cross-flash to the latest official Broadcom 9400-8i firmwareThanks for mentioning 430-8i, is it straightforward to flash these into IT mode?
This is what i purchased, Lenovo Avago 430-8I SAS/SATA 12GB HBA Bus Adapter 01KN500 High Profile | eBay. Where can I get the latest firmware for this. It's just an HBA so already in it mode, but it's very easy to cross-flash to the latest official Broadcom 9400-8i firmware
I did that with my Lenovo 430-16i
