Hello,

I want to buy a power efficient HBA to connect SM 846 SAS3 backplane (BPN-SAS3-846EL1) to H12SSL motherboard. Is there recommended seller on ebay or otherwise (US) to get this card?

Thanks

there are fakes, but mostly located in china, and california. As long as reviews of the user are positive, and not set in china i'd say you would be good on ebay.

In one of my systems i have lenovo 430-8i and its fine; but some people had problems. *(they are cheaper option)

Those reference-design white-box variants from china are perfectly fine, especially for non-critical home, test- or standby servers. Never had any issues with those (or similar whie-label NICs etc) in 15+ years...
The failure risk of branded or OEM 'used/refurbished' cards is at least equally high, if not higher, especially if the environment in which they were used is unknown.

I did have issues with counterfeit intel nic's, and old 9200 sas controllers. In short they were much older chips sold branded and overclocked as newer models.

And? As far as I know, nothing prevents from using a Tri-Mode card as a plain SAS HBA for SAS/SATA drives only.
Thats right, they are still sas controllers. The tri-mode itself is a feature name that refers to support of sata/sas/pci.

I bought last year october two 9500-8i from amazon us for ~96$ each (~110€ with import taxes). They were on my wishlist for a few days and then amazon gave me a coupon/offer for like 50% off :D
They came in clear plastic "boxes" with both profiles and were sealed in an antistatic bag. (I've updated the firmware a couple of times and will use them in my next file server/nas projects at home)

Thanks for mentioning 430-8i, is it straightforward to flash these into IT mode?
It's just an HBA so already in it mode, but it's very easy to cross-flash to the latest official Broadcom 9400-8i firmware

I did that with my Lenovo 430-16i

I bought the 430-8i card.

It is recognized by the system
Code:
$ lspci
81:00.0 Serial Attached SCSI controller: Broadcom / LSI SAS3408 Fusion-MPT Tri-Mode I/O Controller Chip (IOC) (rev 01)
lsiutil shows the following,

Code:
$ lsiutil

LSI Logic MPT Configuration Utility, Version 1.72, Sep 09, 2014

1 MPT Port found

Port Name Chip Vendor/Type/Rev MPT Rev Firmware Rev IOC
1. ioc0 LSI Logic 00af 01 206 0b000300 0

Current active firmware version is 0b000300 (11.00.03)
Firmware image's version is BL 21:33:34 10/23/2019

x86 BIOS image's version is MPT35BIOS-9.21.00.00 (2019.04.04)
EFI BIOS image's version is 0.11.00.00

However mstflint is unable to open it,

Code:
$ mstflint -d 81:00.0 q full
-E- Cannot open Device: 81:00.0.
Is this the latest firmware?
