This is related to the Dell PoweEdge t140
If my Math is correct, 8 x consumer SSDs should pull less power than 4 x 3.5HDDs.
With the current cabling in the T140, only one SFF port on my H730P is used.
I was able to buy a 2nd SAS/SATA x 4 cable that I will connect to the 2nd port of my H730P.
These's only one problem: There is only a single PCIe x6 power receptacle on the motherboard so I need to take the two 6pin PCIe cables and make their power connector into one without soldering (if possible).

Is anyone anyway of one such adapter? I need to power these two with a single motherboard connector.?
Thanks for reading,

Vincent

The easiest solution if you can't find the appropriate adapters and don't want to solder is to use some terminal block to splice the cables you do have in the correct way - this sort of stuff:

Obviously you need to be careful to check you aren't connecting anything that shouldn't be connected, and that everything is rated for the amount of current that is required.

I'm not sure I quite follow what it is you need to do so proceed at your own risk, I accept no responsibility if you burn down your house/business etc etc.

One thing I would observe is that 2.5" SSDs are only powered from the 5v line so the PCIE power connector (which only carries 12v as I recall) may be unnecessary anyway.

Hi @Ruklaw,
Good point about the 5V rail for the SSDs.. I have gone the soldering route and.... it works well, impendance is nominal (as measured) but as you said, I probably can't tell since the SSD's aren't using the 12V anyway. :)
My SSDs used to show up on my H730P as ID 0,1,2,3.. now with both SAS+power cables in place, they show up as ID 0,1,4,5 :)

That's a lot neater than my terminal block solution (I see you had some on standby :p), well done.

I didn't do such a good job of soldering but I checked the impedance on both sides of my blobs and it was around the same as one inch of the cables in the power PCIe 6pin cable so not much of a difference for the overall cable.

hello, I want to install 4 ssds using 2.5 brackets in the 3.5 disk slot, I wonder if only the bracket will be enough for this.
I also want to install 1 ssd by attaching the converter in the dvd drive section.

say what?
Yes, 4x2.5 SSDs in the 3.5 disk slots will be easy (and there are even brackets on amazon to make install easy).. No idea about the DVD converter, though...

thank you, I have a few more questions for your feedback, and I would be very glad if you could answer them;
* i want to use the 1tb 870 evo as an ssd disk, do you recommend this disk.
* I will do raid5 with 3 disks + 1 disk will be a Jul, in this case, I need to install esx or hyperv 1 more disk for installing the host operating system, there is a sata port on the motherboard, but I will need energy, and where can I get it.
* which bracket is sold on amazon that you mentioned, can you share a link?

I would request your support.

@sonkam
I use 2Tb 870 disks in all of my Poweredges as their bootdisk (and homes, software, etc..), they're very reliable and don't overheat.
I recommend against using 870's in RAID5 as it will wear them out faster but then again it depends on your workloads. (even though they are TLC, their endurance isn't stellar).
The brackets I used were ICY Dock EZ-FIT MB082SP PRO 2 x 2.5 Inch to 3.5 Inch Drive Bay SATA SSD/HDD Mounting
I hope that answers your question.
Regards,
