Not bad. I put in an offer to see if it gets accepted. 50% would still be a very long time. Wanna try 4 of these over a 25gbe connection for ISCI to store all of my game installs.

The screenshot shows firmware NA54. Not sure if it is the latest one.

Yea. I saw that in the description too. This thread seems to suggest that NA54 is a recent firmware without the 32k or 40k hour bug. https://forums.servethehome.com/index.php?threads/ebay-3-84tb-netapp-sas-ssd-100.46585/

The other listing from the same seller had a screenshot showing the total hours. I need to find it again to see if it's the same drive and Firmware. Because I recalled seeing it was over the 40k in hours.

But I don’t know if the NA04 of the samsung is the same NA04 of the Toshiba. Probably not

I'm not sure either. And I was thinking of that thread but it was probably another thread. I will take my chances and let you guys know. I made another offer.

Looks like NA54 is the latest firmware and it fixed the issue on these drives:

SU486: [Impact: Critical] SSD (TPM4*) firmware to prevent data loss / unavailability - 支持公告 - Lenovo NetApp: 智慧数据构建智能世界

NetApp® has identified that the drive models listed in the table below fail at a higher rate than other drives shipped by NetApp. As a result, NetApp has implemented a drive firmware fix that can be upgraded non-disruptively to mitigate the issue. The updated firmware is available from the Drive Firmware Download page on the NetApp Support site.

Update to the minimum drive firmware for these affected drive part numbers and identification strings:

Part NumberDrive IdentifierCapacityFW
X/SP-357AX357_TPM4V3T8AME3.8TBNA54

Issue Description
Impactful issues resolved with this firmware release:

  1. Excessive NAND programming / erasure can lead to media errors and drive failure.
  2. Needless increase in erase counts of some logical blocks during refresh operations can result in gratuitous drive failure for medium errors.
  3. Unnecessary drive failure due to misreported 03/11/FF error.

50% seems really risky no?

Risky for what? These drives are rated for 1 DWPD. 4 drives (3 after parity) at 50%, gives you close to 1000 times 10TB of writes. And maybe a bit more if those writes are sequential. That's a humongous amount of writes for any regular NAS usage. You could argue that the drives may not be up to their specifications, but if you have a bad batch, not sure being at 50% or 100% makes a big difference anyway.

The way I see it, a drive like that can easily last 5 years with a moderate usage, and in 5y, it is likely 7.68TB or even 15.36TB drives you will find at those prices.

This is a pretty good deal even with 50% remaining life.
1) the x357a's are slightly faster than the x356a's. These can come in both Samsung and Toshiba flavors.
2) these Toshiba drives are MLC nand as opposed to the TLC nand in the Samsung 1633's
3) NA54 is the right firmware for these from Netapp.
4) For some reason these toshiba's seem to want to identify themselves as hdd in lsblk (ROTA=1). I'm not sure why. Doesn't make a difference in performance though.

Yep. This is what I was thinking as well. Normal usage for me as mostly read only will likely last 5y+ on the conservative side. Non-NAND related issues are probably likelier to occur but I'll make sure to keep air flowing over these.

The seller took $85/drive when I bought 4. I’m wondering if I’ll have to reformat these to 512. Probably.

I offered $100 each for 4 and that was ignored. So I offered $110 each for 4, also ignored.
If you did it in the beginning I would try again. I think at first he kind of had an “I know what I got” attitude, but since it’s been a week and there are still 20 something left he may be a bit more flexible. My offer of 80 a week ago for three was ignored, but 75/4 he countered with 90/4, and I responded with 85/4 and he accepted.

Hahaha. That's exactly what I thought. Not trying to low-ball, but I've seen others at higher life capacity for slightly more that sold out in hours. I ran out of offer attempts because I made 4 offers and cancelled one initially to figure out of the firmware is good. Oh well, another one will come along.

I think I got a bit crazy today and put an Offer of 80 USD for 9 of those and got it approved o_O .

Kinda crazy how the first counter offer of the Seller was much lower than his second one, then he accepted on the 3rd one at 80 USD. I also tried 75 USD/piece and 70 USD/piece beforehand.

I'm just thinking now if I should check with Jetcarrier to get these delivered to me in Denmark.

eBay International Shipping was set at 100 USD for 9 Pieces which seems pretty ridiculous for such a low Weight and relatively low Volume Package (I'd expect no more than say 40cm x 30cm x 30cm.

But for that Volume Jetcarrier quotes me 580 DKK already (90 USD) by Air Freight so I guess it's not so far off. Air Freight seems to have gotten MUCH more expensive lately :(.

Plus of course an extra 25% plus 20 EUR Fee for Customs/VAT at Import.
