i figured the answer to this was no, it wont fit- but i couldn't find any definitive answer on this, online. And the low cost of these 20bay BPN-SAS2-847el1 backplanes (~$30-$50!), was just too tempting to not try it out for myself.
the 847el1 is actually the rear backplane on the sm 4u 36bay chaises (edit; its from the rear of the SM 45bay 4u not 36bay), and you only get 20 drive bays, not 24, as there is a gap for the servers PSUs. It *looked* like it might kinda fit on a normal 24bay 4u SM...
(a BPN-SAS2-846el1 , the proper size sas2 expander for a 4u 24bay SM chassis, routinely sell used on ebay for $250+)
So i rolled the dice as i got a 847el1 for 30$, i was fine with loosing 4 bays to save ~250$. Buuutt ofcourse, it does not fit. some (not all) of the screw holes are just a tad off, and there is no way to make it work (even if dremel ect, there is no way).
(even if you swap the metal cage around w a 846, it wont help).
just wanted to add this info, incase others might be considering trying this. im guessing its mostly why they sell for so cheap (as you can only use them with the somewhat rare 36-bay SM 4U chasis)
some picts (ignore that tiny red arrow, its unrelated)
(btw, @Patrick i think you should consider uping the max image/upload size to 2MB from its current 1MB - i get why its 1MB, but 1.5MB or 2MB would be a bit more convenient and would still, mostly accomplish same goal- tks)
