Does anyone have experience with the seagate ST4000LM016 it looks very attractive for a few places i'm limited to 2.5inch drives and still have 15mm available but it's availability is sporadic at best outside of shucking it from the 4tb backup plus portable STDR4000100 which is around 125 on amazon

How reliable are using these "Laptop" drives though?

24 of these in a JBOD is tempting if they can hold up... or they have a retail warranty, and just run them in RaidZ2/3 :D

Yes that's them on amazon, and they're PMR not SMR they're also available as a bare drive although the price goes all over the board that way(up to 500 some places)

I'd test some myself if i had the spare cash(weddings are expensive) but if they're still this price i may get some when i have to rebuild my offices ip camera server(albiet on windows using storage spaces, blue iris is windows only unfortunately)

I spent an hour or so last month trying to figure these out. There's conflicting info on if they are SMR or not, I don't think they are but couldn't tell for sure.

I'm going to have to trust both storage review and anandtech that it's a PMR drive unless seagate makes a datasheet that says otherwise(and explains why testing doesn't show it as SMR so what magic did they cook up)

The storage review page does say it is SMR, but then they only run sequential tests. I think they are actually responsible for this SMR rumor.

Either it is PMR or they have figured out all of the SMR problems which seems much less likely.

Sorry about that i skimmed the review, with anandtech's results i guess they did better than the site specifically focused on storage?(then again how exciting is an external drive to test...)

When you get them could you please warranty check the bare drive inside it and let us know what it says?

These just arrived. Running full drive scan to ensure they are not duds then will open. Likely tomorrow.

I bought a handful of the Samsung M3 4TB at work for backups (which apparently contains the same drive) for £125/drive and was seriously considering getting some to shuck for the home lab - waiting with baited breath for Patrick's review to see whether it's worth it!

Check back this afternoon. Two breakfast meetings, mid morning meeting then a lunch meeting. Should be able to work on this after that. Drive #1 was 95% done when I left this morning. Camera is all set up and ready.

Status report:

Dis-assembly complete. Need to edit photos and get the guide going. Did find something interesting in the process (teaser much?)
