Better is the PWS-920P-SQ or if you are not going to drawless power then the PWS-501P-1R (no personal experience on the 501 - just read its about the quietest SM psu you can get for this chassis.
Just since I recently had both on my desk - when they both are idle then the SQ is quieter since it slows the internal fan.
When running normally/fans present they are equally loud (or silent) - therefore I tend to use the 501P due to increased efficiency.

On a side node - the PWS-1K03A-1R (Titanium) is also surprisingly silent and should handle low power builds well due to increased efficiency

Also here is a search for less expensive 3.5 to 2.5 HS tray adapters. While the dell model is cheaper, they restrict the airflow over the 2.5 drives. HP ones and Lenovo have recess for airflow. I don't have any experience with these but have a few Intel plastic ones that came with the P4000 chassis and they do restrict the airflow.

ebay search -

Okay, that search string is really handy, thanks! I can't speak for definitively, but for some reason the HP adapters didn't work in my SM chassis. They worked everywhere else (Dell, Chenbro, etc.), just not in my SM. I've got no idea why, and its probably just me, which is sad because they are generally inexpensive and made well.

My one and only 836TQ chassis is Dell branded but appears to be an unmolested SM. I've never seen anything proprietary HP work in anything other than an HP. They do this on purpose.

I was hoping I could get some clarification one this chassis/backplane. Does this support SAS3 drive(s) assume the HBA does as well?

Thanks

Does this have narrow or Wide edge connector? PWS-1K28-SQ is compatible only with PDBs that have wider edge connectors.

TQ & A back planes will support 12gbps provided you have the right HBA and quality cables.
I am looking to turn this chassis into a JBOD using a CSE-PTJBOD-CB3 that I currently have in an SC846. Could you point me in the direction of the cables I would need? From what I have found I need something similar to this ( AOM-SAS3-8I8E ) to go from the HBA to the 836 chassis, what I am not sure of is what I need to go from the TQ backplane to that internal Mini-SAS HD to external Mini-SAS HD, or if there is another way.

Thanks!

If you are planning for a JBOD in 836 chassis and connect all 16 drives,

You need either 1 x AOM-SAS3-16i16e or 2 x of the 8i8e ones you linked.

You need 4 x SFF-8644 to SFF-8644 cables - Link

1 x 16E or 2 x of 8E HBAs in the host that will be connecting to this JBOD..

4 x (SFF-8643 to 4x SATA Forward break out cables) link

Just a thought --
For the cost of the stupid external to internal converter(s) and 4 x external cables, you can get something like this

A Dremel tool will fix that.
That's a really bad idea. Please don't do that. The larger contact surface area is required due to the higher amount of power that the PSU is capable of delivering.

That is a very good point, heck between what I could probably sell the CB3 (also have CB1 and CB2) JBOD card I could probably cover the cost of the MB.

Thanks again!

I've got a couple of them I've dremeled and they've been running 24/7 for years without a problem. You're not going to convince me it it's safe.

Just because your setup hasn't caught fire, doesn't mean it's a good idea. It's no different than say using wiring rated for 15A in your house when your breakers are 20A.

Can't stop people from doing dumb things, however I can certainly advise everyone else to not follow suit.
Well, you're a complete nobody to me so why should I give a damn about your opinion?

And as far as doing dumb things, criticizing my choices is as dumb as it gets. Just go away and play in your sandbox.

Well, you certainly are bitter for being told that defeating a safety mechanism is inadvisable, aren't you.

I took a dremel to 6 of the 920 sq models 3-4 years ago and havnt had any issues.
Now that you can get the 920 platinum with smaller pcb for around $20 Im considering replacing them
