I took a dremel to 6 of the 920 sq models 3-4 years ago and havnt had any issues.
Now that you can get the 920 platinum with smaller pcb for around $20 Im considering replacing them
Wow, that's a hella good price.

$20.00 very good price shipped.

to be clear for anyone that does not look carefully though, this is NOT the "SQ" or PWS-920P-SQ power supply.
Query: In my experience most of the Golds and Platinums, at least below 1kw, are pretty quiet at idle. Are these? I know the SQs will be even quieter, but honestly as long as they're in the same range as the 501P-1Rs or 741P-1Rs I'm perfectly fine with that.

I think those two are the exception in the non-SQ line for noise

I have a couple on the way also. I have other platniums that are pretty darn quiet but no 920's. I also have a stack of Ablecoms for emergency use only. Talk about loud, they are LOUD.

I picked one of these up from Minostech. Very nice people and quick shipping. The chassis had some damage in shipment. Most of it I can fix, but Minostech is shipping a replacement ear for the one that got bent. I have to do some creative fixing for the other side, where the cap lock got sheared off, but a trip to HD/Lowes should come up with a solution. I did power up the chassis and honestly the PS is not that bad noise wise, so I will leave those in for now. I did swap out the chassis fans from the stock nidec ones to FAN-0074L4 mid plate and FAN-0104L4 back of chassis to deal with some noise.

That is a common issue unfortunately. I generally remove rack ears when shipping and request that sellers do the same. The mounts are prone to being sheared off with impact and I haven't figured out a good way to fix it.

Well if I do, I will post my fix. Just finished testing swapping out the fans to lower the noise level, without impacting airflow too much. It seems that the stock rear fans are 6700 rpm 59CFM fans that top out at 47 dbA according to Supermicro website. The ones I brought to replacement 2800 rpm 33 CFM and top out at 24 dbA. So for now, I will leave those stock fans there maybe down the road swap them out and how much hotter it gets to reduced the noise by almost half. The mid chassis fans are like night and day noise wise. The stock ones run at 7K rpm pushing 72 CFM at 54 dbA and the replacement ones are 5K pushing 68.5 CFM at 45 dbA. So I did the swap for those. All noise tests were done with my sound meter at a distance of 5 feet. Don't ask why 5 feet, just worked out that was what I had to work in.

Please keep discourse civil, no one likes to be wrong, suck it up.

Bypassing electrical safeties is frowned upon for many reasons... Just because your use-case hasn't created a fire doesn't mean you aren't playing loose and fast. If you want to detail how you calculated the safety margins and for what workloads your modifications can accompany feel free.

I know we are all adults here, and we are wound a little tighter these days so give each other some breaks... no need for us to be quick to snap at each other. We all have our niches we are experts in, remember to be open to advise from each other... and when giving, remember that you are a noob in other fields, be nice.

Wow, that's a hella good price.

Definitely not as quiet as my SQs. And it has a different fan, so its making a weird warble when running next to an SQ. Looks like its going on the shelf as a spare.

Haven't had chance to try mine out yet. Intended server is in the middle of a multi terabyte copy operation. Have to wait for it to finish. Current PSU is a PWS-1K21P-1R and it's hella noisy. Will be replacing it with either one or both of the PWS-920P-1R's.

Just a FYI the seller is really good about making sure the buyers are happy.
These can be returned minus the cost of shipping or you can refuse them at delivery.
I bought 3 and will update as well.
