i'm not trolling, you can read commercial law, it's only a few thousand years old.. and also read ebay terms.

In a court this would be decided on a case by case basis. In this case, it's a common item worth a few dollars. It's not a rare collector's item where value is determined by how much someone is willing to pay. The buyer only has to claim he didn't know what a cable like this is actually worth, and he had no clue.

At minimum the seller would be obligated to fully refund including all expenses the buyer suffered, and then be banned from ebay for violating the terms.

In a court of law the seller would 100% be found liable.

The target audience for late-20th Century cabling is the US Gov't, has to be. News out of San Francisco the other day that the local gub'mint is staring down a $210M bill to replace their 5.25" floppy-disc-based rail systems by 2028. Only gov't can be this stupid and inefficient.

Lots of us still hoard/have some ancient tech, doesn't mean we actually use it all or at all.

Make floppies hard again.

You accidently wrote 100% instead of 0%.

No offense but people like why are why im glad i dont deal much with B2C.

People skimming through laws/regulations and ignoring the parts that does not fit their view.
Like the qualifiers for laws to apply...

You have left reality but you do you man.

With no deceptive marketing, no claims about value made etc type circumstances this would be a clear loss for the buyer.

Funny, I recently recycled\junked my very very old school wrapped cables like these... they were the old ones that were thick even after cut from ribbon and wrapped in what seemed like a high end soft plastic. I was amazed after probably 20 years they were still flexible and not cracked.

I got a box of them and its always somewhat suprising how prestine they still are when im grabbing one to use.

They make great donor cables with their length and amount of leads when making the front io wireloom for a custom case etc

This listing was posted on Monday, 08-Apr-19 07:36:02 UTC (5 years ago) according to WatchCount, what's funny is that I managed to find a cached copy on Yandex from February 26, 2023 19:52:43 GMT where it had the same price and also 94 sold.

I decided to check the reviews on ebay for this specific item and found at least 14 reviews, all of people being happy, however when you enable "classic view" for the feedback page and then explicitly search by the item / listing id (293040177541) you will see a price attached to the review which seems to indicate the item was originally listed for <$5 which makes a whole lot more sense.

1733449188816.png

edit:
My conclusion is that they didn't want to take down or cancel the listing, and it was set to end in a few days from now according to WatchCount (Sunday, 08-Dec-24 08:36:02 UTC), so the seller bumped the price to something no one would ever pay for it, maybe cancelling or ending listings prematurely has some negative impact on ratings or there's other reasons to keep the listing up, not sure, maybe someone experienced with selling on ebay can tell us.

Interesting comments, well, maybe i'm a fool.

If a grocery store would charge $500 for 12 eggs, and some unsuspecting customer would buy it, and later check his cc bill and notice the error, the seller would be liable. Because the seller would clearly know the price is a fraud.

This seller obviously would knows the price is a fraud. There are laws for this, consumer protection and whatnot..

I still maintain you are not allowed to knowingly deceive your customers, and that includes ebay sellers.
Obvisously it all depends on wether the seller would accept the deal. IMO if he would, while clearly knowing it's false since he sells alot of cables, the seller is responsible, not an unsuspecting buyer that only needs a cable like this, does an ebay search, and orders this one.

Oops, well, to all those who say i'm trolling, took the time to google this one:

Commercial law - Wikipedia

"The history of commercial practices traces back to early civilizations where commerce was crucial for society, and regulation was necessary to facilitate and secure transactions. Commercial law, sometimes referred to as mercantile law, evolved organically through the collective practices of merchants, known as the "lex mercatoria" or law of merchants during the Middle Ages. The development of these rules was largely a response to the needs of the international trade community, which needed standardized rules to facilitate business across different regions and legal systems. The lex mercatoria laid the foundation for modern commercial law and was characterized by its flexibility, simplicity, and ability to adapt to changing trade practices.[7]"

It has a negative impact to cancel long running listings with sales, and it could be benefitial for a few things to keep it sitting.
If you are not selling uniqe products then ebay is about "playing" the algorithms and account system.

I like to compare ebay to making your own online store but with insane payment processing fees.
Most will not leave the first page of search results before buying and suprisingly few "average consumers" sort by price.
The more listings you can work into first page the more traffic you get and the better your listings are the more they convert.

That might be true but price gouging is still illegal. Hiking the price 10,000% is not the 'normal and correct way' to do this on ebay. It's illegal both on ebay and in all business practices. If this seller sells you this cable for this price, he is liable for a full refund including all expenses, and also subject to:

"Removing the listing or other content, issuing a warning, restricting activity or account suspension."

If the seller refuses to a full refund, and the buyer takes the matter to small claims court, the seller, once again, would 100% be found liable.

In short, every claim i've made in this thread is correct, and those who claim i'm detached from reality, or trolling, are wrong.
This is not the first time someone is wrong on the internet, it's ok, we can just agree to learn, and move on :)

Yeah you are not the first, not the end of the world.

I still belive you are mostly trolling tbh
If you think this is not normal to do or something ebay does anything about, then you as a minimum atleast have no experience with the sales side of ebay.
You will have no problem finding tens of thousands of listings like this and partner/brand accounts with them by the 100s.
You will also find plenty of replies by ebay staff accounts suggesting to also disable most shipping methods or increasing price on them also to avoid orders.

ebay are VERY trigger happy on taking down listings and bans, to the point of permabanning company accounts with significant sales because they already had listings posted of items that ebay changed policy on over night.
It would not be allowed at this scale if they actualy wanted to do anything about it.

I have never claimed this is not occurring on ebay, or something ebay rigorously enforces. I've never claimed that.
I have claimed it's against ebay terms, and that it is also illegal worldwide.

if you by worldwide mean there is some country its illegal in then you would probably be correct.
As for it actualy being illegal worldwide you are completely wrong.

If they were to drop it back to to something like 300$ and call it a sale without having the price at 500$ for long enough, that would be illegal in most of the western world today.
(For some countries you would also need to document having sold it at the 500$ price)
Just offering it at 500$ would not be.

Christ you don't give up do you?

I just quoted this from straight from ebay:

No, i'm absolutely correct, and you are absolutely wrong.

This is funny

You really need to drop it, as you are 1000% wrong about ebay caring if this sells for 500 or 5 or 50$.

Your comparison against FOOD PRODUCTS is also not apples apples comparison so it's not a valid argument.

How about another extreme example.... I sold something on ebay for $150, I received it FREE so did everyone else. The price then went up to 1000$ when supply dropped but demand was still there. eBay is happy it went up, they make more money with their %.

You should go spend time on amazon and find auto-price bot items without a price cap, no one is filing a lawsuit against those companies either.

Or, maybe you want to take it a step further and talk about companies that sell supplements.. some sell them for $5\bottle and others sell the EXACT SAME THING for $50 or $100, that's 10x the price or more....

Against ebays terms and illegal worlwide, lol, you are a troll and should be banned.
That specific wording cannot be enforced on 99.99999% of items on ebay, it's a CYA wording for items that must be sold fairly, but you never have to buy a IDE cable so you can price it at whatever you think is fair. Do you understand how ridiculous you sound?
