There is some level of fan curve, but it is loud enough that I can hear it almost everywhere in my 10,000 ft house. That being said its quiet enough that for most of the house its just white noise that is unnoticeable unless it is totally quiet. I sleep in the room right next to it and it does not stop me from sleeping too much. I could try to get some idea of db if you care enough. Its not terrible on the lowest fan settings. I have heard much worse, but its not great.

That's pretty loud then --I can't hear my R710 in my parents 12,000 ft house when I'm not in an area where the sound is directly transmitable.

The fans are not controlled by the mb they plug into the expander board so thermals dont mean much and they just spin at pretty high rpm. You could move the connection to the mb and it will quite it down a bit.
