I got my first 2U chassis and while I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it exactly I am sure I'm going to do something with it. To that end I need to keep the CPU cool (E5-2670). Is the preferred choice a large flat heatsink like this Dynatron R30 or a more upright unit like a Dynatron R5?

Both are rated up to 160 TDP, which is plenty, both move about the same amount of air and both will fit. I don't have any ducts or ports or plastic air channels so they will depend on whatever air is normally pulled through the chassis. I'm leaning toward the large flat one only because it is 20db quieter at full speed.

Your thoughts?

I would use the R5 in a normal server chassis.

Just make sure whatever you get is the right ILM version (standard or narrow).

Yes, they both are the square ILM version and not the narrow. Why did you pick one over the other?

I started with a couple of Dynatron R14's and they did not get the job done. I replaced them with a couple of Supermicro SNK-P0050AP4 and temps dropped over 20c. The Supermicro's are also quieter. I recently ran prime95 and temps only got to 61c on cpu2 and mid 50's on cpu1. At idle they're both in the 40's. For some reason, cpu2 always runs hotter on SM boards.

Your motherboard will either support square or narrow ILM. You just need to ensure the heatsink and motherboard ILM match.

With this being a 2U build that Supermicro isn't going to fit unless you know something I don't.

This might be one of the few things in a server build that nobody has an opinion on.
