Starting a thread for DIY server build plans in 2013:

New storage:
CPU- Haswell Intel Xeon E3-1200V3
Memory - DDR3 as much as we can use
Controllers - 3x LSI SAS 2008
Disks - 1/2 Samsung 840 SSD and 1/2 4TB Toshiba drives
Networking - Infiniband FDR or QDR
ZFS based on Napp-in in an all-in-one.

Also want to add a few Xeon L5420 or L5520 machines. Maybe that one posted here or one of the microclouds.

My first thought is 'why' ?.

Is it because you can or are you strying to solve a problem ?. Both are as equally valid but some background would be good.

Why the 3x LSI 2008 rather than 1 or 2 with an expander ?. Why so many cards for between 2 and 4 drives (1/2 SSD + 1/2 4TB HDD) ?.

This OP has question marks flying around my head more and more :confused: :D.

I think OP meant 50% of his drives were going to be 840 SSDs and the other 50% 4TB Toshibas.

Haswell = another new CPU socket, V3 = really V1 LGA1150

At least you've given your self plenty of time as the Haswell, probably won't hit shelves till at least March
