I see 80-90 watt power usage on the barebone system with OS. It is definitely high on the power usage, I was kind of surprised with it.
That is surprising for me as well. I am running an E3-1241v3, 32GB RAM, a Quadro P620, and LSI 9211-8i.
3 chassis fans, 1CPU fan, 4x HGST Ultrastar HDDs, and 4x Intel S3510 SSDs in a Supermicro 2.5" chassis all stuffed in a CSE-835 case with a single 1000w "quiet" power supply.

Running UNRAID at idle I am at 112w average. Once I stuff the other 4 HDDs in and get some transcoding going I will get a good "max" value.

I don't think that 80-90 watts is all that unexpected, that's actually why I asked. It has 3 older 2-port 10 Gigabit Ethernet (not SFP+) ports built in. That's a 45nm part from 2012...Those things have like a 10 or 12 watt TDP each. Conservatively, that is 30 watts right there. Add a CPU, RAM, storage, and overhead...
I have a E3-1265L v3 put away for this chassis, so using a 45 watt CPU vs an 80 watt one should help some under load.

The vendor bios isn't updated. All they did was take the password we gave them after they promised a credit of $100, (but backed out of), provide it to IBM, who gave them the bios without a password. Then flashed the password free bios to the servers , but raised the rate. Our bios is fully updated with latest micro code among other things.
Was this the ebay vendor or TheServerStore? Who do you represent?

It was a request of our employer, so we represent neither. We use these servers for untangle appliances, where i work, among other things, and being told told it wasn't possible annoys my boss a great deal. So we took it into our own hands to get the password, followed by an updated bios to share with everyone else regardless of cost.
Y'all are awesome people for doing this!
I got my motherboard before this thread even started... I noticed I am at 3.2 and I had a cleared password. I am wondering if the BIOS is the same between my board and what you posted or if it is just a strange coincidence at this point.

My server from TheServerStore will be here tomorrow--I will let everyone know as I can what the BIOS situation is.

Mine came a few weeks ago and realized I couldn't boot from the NVME addon card - had the same problem with an X10DRI until I learnt how to mod the SMC bios.

Have included the modded 3.2 Bios from Bluefox. You will need to reset CMOS after install - did mine from a Rufus FreeDos USB.

As usual I accept no responsibility ... yada yada ... use at your own risk :D

TheServerStore sent me the wrong thing...

Waiting on a reply from their support team to see how they will handle it..

I transplant the system board from 1u chassis to a iStar 2u ( unknown model , 17"w x 15" D ) case.
I brought the iStar many years ago, it turn out the 2u case was built for Supermicro board.
The case Front Panel connector matched SM FP pinouts. All leds indicator and button worked.

The system running Ubuntu 18.0.4 idle at 48w.
Config
E3-1240 v3
4 x 4 gb udimm
1 Intel SSD
2 Front 80mm fan, 1 x 80mm CPU heatsink fan.

Fan profile set to Optimal speed, no need to run ipmitool to set therehold.
2 Front fan running at 1100rpm, CPU fan is at 1600 rpm.
Nice and quiet , just low hum.

Next steps, transplant more system boards to 2u case and build a cluster.

Want to thank everyone for the mod BIOS

RE: Power Consumption.

The PCIE version of the Intel X540-T2 use 17.4w @ 10Gbe. I believe this board has 3x sets of the dual port X540-T2 chips. So that's a little over 52w just for those 6x 10Gbe ports.

Interesting. I have mine running at 80+w - fluctuates between 80 and 85 at idle with similar stats. I do have 4x2TB 7.2k drives, but that should be less than 20w at idle. Do you have any of the ethernet ports connected at that power draw? I do, but I'm only running one.

I managed to do this on another Supermicro X10 but not this one - the BIOS modding tool didn't seem to like the v3.2 BIOS for me (not sure what I did wrong).

Anyway, wanted to say thank you for publishing this. I used it today successfully on both my machines and both are now booting via NVME. Thanks!

Ubuntu using 1 gb network port , and 1 ipmi network port.

I still have a system in the 1u chassis, will test it out later and report back.

I am in process of moving the system board to istar 2u case, waiting on fans from Ebay.
Once I have build a proxmox cluster working, I'll have more concrete power number.

I glued a 80mm Artic fan on top of the 3 x 10gbe Ethernet chips, it added about 1-2w to the system.

What kind of glue did you use?

amazing goop ,
If change your mind later , you could still remove the fan.
I place one edge of the 80mm on top of the 6 ports and apply glue.

Thanks. I want attach a 40mm fan to the SAS controller on a Supermicro X10SRH-CF. Can't see any way to do it other than glue.

Wonder if hot glue would work?
