Dammit. That would have well solved a problem build I'm having. I'll have to keep my eye out for more, knowing that it's possible now! Thanks!
LOL! Recently I bid & won on auction for 9 x 16GB without realizing it was 4R x 8 and paid almost this much.
MICRON MT36JDZS2G72PDZ-1G4 16GB 4RX8 PC3-10600R. The DDR3 ECC has been crazy lately.

you know, that listing has a stock photo of some generic ram. when i looked the IBM part numbers listed, those are VLP RDIMMs. Are there any issues in using VLP RDIMMs on standard server motherboards? Do they require better cooling considering they are thicker and denser? never used VLP before...

BTW, the same seller has more of these selling them individually, and taking best offers:

90Y3223 IBM BladeCenter HX5 16GB 4RX4 PC3L-8500R ECC RDIMM 47J0178 90Y3221 | eBay

they are asking $29/16GB each, although shipping seems rather high for low quantity. could probably make a similar offer as the 256GB bundle deal...

but as stated above, these are VLP... I don't know if that limits compatibility with certain motherboards... ???

I can't speak to those DIMM's in particular. But I have used BladeCenter HS23 PC3L LP DIMM's without issue in C6100's and Dell R610/R710/R410's. If anything's going to limit the compatibility, it'll be the 4Rx4 quad ranking.

The VLP DIMMs have the chips stacked on top of each other, effectively making the DIMMs twice as thick. I'm just not sure if that requires motherboards that have special spacing of the dimm slots? Are LP thicker? Think LP the just have less PCB...

Mine didn't seem much thicker. But in the case of the HS23's they were pulled from, the DIMM slots were at a 45 degree angle, if I recall (for sure on HS21's that I'm gutting now), which would certainly have been able to accommodate that if needed. Good question.

well, to answer my own question. i received these DIMMs today and tried seating them in a X8DTH-6F board. Pictures attached. They are definitely thicker, but appear to be as thick as the DIMM slot itself so should fit most motherboards. I don't know if the higher density requires better cooling or not as I haven't turned on the machine with them yet. At this price, it is a cheap way to get lots of RAM though...
