These have come down in price so much. They're not the cheapest price/GB, but if you're wanting more storage and have a limited number of drive bays maybe these are worth it? 15TB on a single drive is a lot.

I have a future use for them but not yet. Hopefully prices come down even more.

I'm going to go the large ssd route when i get a big catamaran sailboat to live on in a few years. I'll be able to keep my storage, not susceptible to wave motion and super low power is needed. Low power usage is the name of the game. Musk needs to hurry up and get that low orbit sat network running for me

That's a great use case! Maybe throw squid on there to stretch the Musk-net bandwidth further

This is costly, but that density is oh so sweet. Would love to banish the spinning rust from my personal storage.... Seems like that future may be close

<--Does some quick math.

Chassis = ~$2,000
Drives = 88 x 1500 = $132,000

Total after rounding, server etc etc = $140K
That gives you...1,320 TB = 1.3PB of all flash storage.

Actually, that's not too bad at all, and I lied. I can afford it as such, but the question is...what would I use it for? Caching solves speed issues, so....why?

@Gene for low power ssd you want sata or the newer read intensive NVMe versions, SAS is rather power hungry and also has that HBA needed power to be considered.

I went all flash storage at home though , just 4 spinning things left used for some backup. Given the price is really now coming down for flash I think it’s time it takes over for most roles.

Good point about SAS it is power hungry. I have a few. Sata seems to be the sweet spot

The funny thing is that when you break it down, it's just $100/TB, which is about the going rate for the cheapest of sata ssds. Some unreal capacity though 1.3PB--I'm sure at some point, the early Internet could have fit in that. :eek:
