The price is still $199 on bestbuy but it says it is not available anymore. It makes you wish you had ordered more.

My local BB's have them a plenty (Chicago suburbs). I put 6 of them into TrueNAS build and they show up as normal 7200 rpm drive.

It's pretty hilarious how these guys basically have unlimited supply that they've been hoarding all year just to dump it on Black Fri

I think the key is that if you cannot wait for black Friday, you pay for the retail price.

Are these drives helium filled? They run quite warm. 54C under load is very high. Hopefully they won't die prematurely.

These can be had for $169.99 at BBY if you bring in an old HDD, SSD or thumb drive to recycle. 15% off coupon for doing so, and stacks against the $199 Black Friday price. YMMV, but many stores will also let you do multiples even though it's supposed to be 1 per household.

I traded in 2 old HDDs, DBAN'd both, broke chips off the embedded board with a screwdriver, and drilled 3 holes completely through the platters... they didn't care.

There were reports that these enclosures cannot be used for other drives but I was able to make them work with an old 250GB sata drive. It might be useful to save a few of the onboard cards to use as a basic usb adapter for sata drives.

I thought I'd run a test before shucking this drive and it is making unusual sounds at idle (a short "burp" every 5 seconds) and during the SMART short test (grinding sounds) though SMART data shows nothing amiss. How has others' experience been?

Thanks

Installed a Seagate 2TB drive. It is working without any issues, it seems like you can use the old cases pretty much with any 3.5" sata drive.

On the sad side, Bestbuy is not giving 15% coupons for recycling drives anymore. I thought this was ongoing all the time. Should we expect this come back again later next year?

Too bad about the coupon, I was hoping to get some more later. Bought 3 of them with the 15% coupon.
Just finished testing, chucking, and installing them last night. Got 5 total in a ZFS Z2 array.

About the chucked adapters, they've worked for pretty much any drive I've put in them. The exception has been some old SSDs where a 128gb OCZ was detected as 1TB and a WD Black 2 Hybrid just refused to work at all.

that is pretty wild, I recall the best buy language saying they would offer the WD recycling through 2022. but now it seems maybe they ghosted it?
