Hallo everybody,
i have a few questions about creating a "Webpage" for my personal network ...
I've planned to build a NAS and use the OS FreeNAS for it.
I'll explain what I mean with webpage...
My intent is to create a NAS with my personal Media (like I posted in another threat) and I thought...
Hallo everybody,
I again have a few questions about the usage (or building) of a NAS Server.
I want to create a private NAS with a huge amount of files (I think there are about 18 Terabyte of files I want to save) and my biggest fear is to lose them due to Bit Rot.
So I Read that ZFS should be...
Hey!
I am in the process of getting a proper 10gbit vaai supported storage solution for my home lab.
I am considering the QNAP TS-831X, as it has 2x sfp+ built-in, and vaai support + vsphere plugin.
Not sure if the performance will be good enough though.
So, I found some hardware I might...
Selling a Synology RS3617XS+. Note this is the "plus" addition that this is the higher end model. No hard disks are included with this system.
The Synology RS3617xs+ is in very good condition and has some slight wear from being used in a rack and its rails (not included). The system is about...
Hello Everybody,
Like I mentioned in a previous thread I want to use ZFS for my personal storage.
I found a cheap deal for a Hard drive storage which supports JBOD.
My question, Does this JBOD storage have to support ZFS or not.
technically it should not matter, I think.
I'm looking to fill an 8-bay NAS (FreeNAS) with good quality second hand disks that are not worn down to their last legs. WD Reds are ideal, but if you have anything in good condition I would be very interested too. I'm thinking 6-8 TB each, and 8-12 drives. Some sort of...
Hello,
I have NEW 2x WD RED NAS drives left over after a build. Each has warranty till 07/01/2019.
We used a mixed of WD Mybook, Easystore, and OEM for a large 120x- 8TB drive install in 2x Dell 3060e. These are some of the higher end 256mb cache drives. Brand NEW, great for a NAS...
Hello Everybody,
it may sound like a dumb question but I'd like to know if I can use a NAS "offline" ?
Well I mean if I can use the NAS with a WLAN Router which is not connected with the internet ...
So I could share my date with WiFi technology nearby the location or use it via an ethernet...

Disclaimer: I'm a super noob when it comes to NA/file servers/pretty-much-anything-network-related. PLease be gentle with me.
I recently moved my work pc to the living room after a bit of maintenance and have become quite accustomed to gaming on 42in tv I scored from a second hand store (for...
Hi, first post here :)
I'm about to build a dedicated storage box at home, where I plan to run WS2016 w/ Storage Spaces as I've grown tired of FreeNAS because of my growing interest in Windows env.
For this build I've planned to use the following components:
- BitFenix Phenom M (mATX version...
New ova templates available, ready to import in ESXi for a full featured NAS/SAN/VM ZFS storage

Im currently running an 'all-in-one' ESXi 6.5 build where my storage tier is a quasi-san but all built into the existing host. The VM root file-system is a VMDK housed on one of the SSD datastores and then I have 4 HDD's passed through to the NAS OS via RDM. The HDDs are setup as a RAID10...
Poking around the internet looking for a NAS Distro to try. I was planning on going to FreeNAS Corral since it had Docker Integration...but we know how that went :(
Seems like most people have gone to ZFS historically because it was more stable than BTRFS, but is that still the case today...
hi for my company i would like to backup a folder with all client data to the QnapNAS and retain changes and deleted files like this:

year03-month03-day02...
I'm stuck in my own thoughts when it comes to my next home server.
I'm currently running out of space in the current system and the setup feels old and inefficient.
APC SmartUPS 1500 (bought used, probably over sized for the task, noisy when the fans runs every now and then. Efficiency? I have...
Hello, this is my (second) post (first was responding to a help request) because someone on SmallNetBuilder suggested I come on over here because this either is more my style, or may be a necessary part of what I have to do.
My name "Twice Shy" should suggest to you that i've suffered serious...
I've recently acquired a Qnap rackmount 16 bay nas, but I've found it to be to loud for my workspace (50 db). Edit: I've found a way to quiet my rack.
It comes with
Dual 10gb Ethernet card (copper)
Upgraded to 16 gb ram
16 4tb Seagate constellation es drives
Rack rails
Redundant power...
Here is a crazy idea I had:
Find some inexpensive second hand laptop with USB 3.0 ports and a Gigabit Ethernet Port
Hang 4TB 2.5" external USB 3.0 drives off the laptop
Install Ubuntu
Enjoy a cheap NAS with BBU, local terminal and hot swap drives.
This may end up being a fun rainy day project...
