I am looking to put a FreeNAS device offsite for backups.
Performance really isn't an issue. I am looking to buy a box that can handle 4 3.5" drives. More compact is better, but not a big concern.
I am hoping I can find something ready to go, and avoid the hassle of researching...
As an update on this. I was blaming the wrong card :)
Two cards had very old firmware. I updated them all to the latest MLX, and everything is working great.
Well, I have been chasing the wrong problem. This is not software/configuration related.
I have 2 cards (purchased as a pair) that will connect to each other.
The other one will not connect to the other 2. But, it will connect with itself (Port 1 to Port 2). I have swapped the card with...
It appears I may be barking up the wrong tree.
ESXi <-> ESXi Gets Link
FreeNas <-> FreeNas (loopback) Gets link
ESXi <-> FreeNas NO LINK
I wonder if I have the ESXi cards stuck in IB? They are 40GB auto-negotiate.
There goes the IB mode theory:
[root@filejunky] ~# sysctl sys.device.mlx4_core0.mlx4_port1
sys.device.mlx4_core0.mlx4_port1: eth
[root@filejunky] ~# sysctl sys.device.mlx4_core0.mlx4_port2
sys.device.mlx4_core0.mlx4_port2: eth
I am wondering if this cards is in IB mode. For what it is worth:
[root@filejunky] /dev# lspci -s 01:00.0 -vvvvvvv
01:00.0 Network controller: Mellanox Technologies MT27500 Family [ConnectX-3]
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company InfiniBand FDR/EN 10/40Gb Dual Port 544QSFP Adapter...
I recently purchased 3 HP 649281-B21:
HP 656089-001 Infiniband 10/40GB DP NIC 649281-B21+ QSFP /SFP's | eBay
649281-B21 656089-001 661685-001 HP IB FDR/EN 10/40GB 2P 544QSFP ADAPTER
I am connecting all 3 together with 3 cables:
Amazon.com: QSFP+ to QSFP+ 40Gb Passive DAC Copper Infiniband...
After some decision making on other fronts, I am finally ready to pull the trigger. If I can go 40gbe, why not :)
I am looking at something like this:
649281-B21 656089-001 661685-001 HP IB FDR/EN 10/40GB 2P 544QSFP ADAPTER | eBay
In addition to the card, what other cables, etc. do I need...
I do not have much experience with KVM, but I'd love to see some data.
I realize there are million variables. The EULA explains the lack of data available. I am just tinkering in a home lab.
I am currently debating between ESXi & Hyper-V for a 50/50 Linux/Windows homelab. I realize in...
Thoughts on this card? MHQH29B-XTR MELLANOX CONNECTX-2 VPI 10Gbe DUAL PORT ADAPTER CARD | eBay
My goal would be to pickup 3 of them, and connect my FreeNAS to each of my Hyper-V servers. I assume these will work on Hyper-V or ESXi.
What cables should I look for? 3ft should be plenty.
This may not be the correct place for this, but I'd love to see a comparison between some of the popular Hypervisors.
Of most interest is ESXi 6.5 vs Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2016 with a linux guest. Perhaps my Google-fu is failing me, but I cannot locate one online.
If all else fails, I...
I am thinking I should relax the 10 GBASE-T requirement. It appears SFP+ is much more common. If I can get 2 port cards, I can avoid a switch anyways.
However, SFP is new and scary :)
As always, budget is a consideration. eBay would be ideal.
I am looking to add 10GBe between two Hyper-V hosts and my FreeNAS setup.
What cards do we like on the FreeNAS side? I have heard some iffy information on the Intel cards.
I would prefer 10GBASE-T, since that seems the simplest.
What is working well for everybody?
