Based on my previous analysis, I decided to buy the following fans:
3x 40x40x20 Sunon MF40201VX-1000U-G99
3x 40x40x20 Same Sky CFM-4020V-180-275-20
1x 60x60x10 Sunon MF60101V1-1000U-G99
My thought process here was that:
The Sunon and Same Sky fans theoretically have identical...
Yeah I have; at least without doing anything else I didn't notice any performance improvement by adding fans in series. I'm going to experiment with adding ducts and stators between them to see if that makes an impact but I can't recommend it at the moment.
Oh dear. You have my apologies! This was a typo as a result of manually typing the model number for the written conclusion. I didn't assess the 10mm fan, so it never formed part of the analysis (the charts all have the MF40201VX-1000U-G99 listed). I've rectified the typo now.
I would suggest...
Yes, sorry - ground and tach. You're right. For what it's worth though, what you're describing is the behaviour I saw when I had ground and tach wired the wrong way. This is a photo of how I've got mine wired for reference:
For future readers, that's tach/power/ground into the board.

I think I caveated the analysis above pretty heavily - this was all done pre-purchase for me. As I stated:
And also, with respect to the fan thresholds:
A few questions for you:
1. Are you doing this mod on the ICX7250-24P?
2. If yes to (1), did you switch the fan pins to meet the...
I have these fans installed in my ICX7250-24P currently and they work fine. In speed 2, I definitely wouldn't call them silent, but they are quieter than the Foxconn in Speed 1. They're closer to silent in Speed 1, but certainly not silent.
3 of these should* give you around ~200W of cooling...
If that's the deal breaker, it looks like the Sunon can be had for ~€8: https://www.digikey.de/en/products/detail/sunon-fans/MF40201VX-1000U-G99/7927784. Looks like a €50 spend for free delivery though.
Looks like there are reports that it doesn't work for the X9SRi-F already: Supermicro X9 compatibility · petersulyok smfc · Discussion #54. I'll see if i can find some time to confirm
I did some analysis for the 7250-24P here, with some extrapolation to the 48P: (Re)Engineering active cooling solutions for servers - A fan mod guide with a case study of the Brocade ICX7250-24P. I haven't posted results yet, but here are some initial insights:
* The biggest win for cooling the...
I don't think that's how the output is read. Speed 1 is up to 41C, so provided it doesn't go above this, it should remain in Speed 1. If it hits 41C or higher though, it goes into Speed 2. It only reverts back to Speed 1 if it then drops below 34C. If temps haven't been higher than 34C then it...
Yeah that's a good point to call out @Mithril. The air is generally turbulent coming out of the first fan in a series, which if stacked with no separation from the second fan will lead to more noise, and probably a loss in efficiency in the subsequent pressure drop. The two treatments to this...
So I went deep down the rabbit hole and did a more formal analysis of the cooling requirement. I didn't want it to get lost in the sea of posts in this thread, so I've created it as a resource here. Warning: there's an extreme amount of over-engineering.
The outcome was that 3x Sunon...
1. Introduction
I've recently been through the process of trying to modify the fan configurations of a number of my servers from the stock OEM configuration to something else to reduce the amount of noise they produce. These servers were often designed without noise output as a meaningful...
So the datasheet on these indicates they have 150 CFM (excellent), 0.571 inwg static pressure and are rated for 53 dbA noise. In contrast the stock fan (at least in my 847) is a Nidec V80E12BHA5-57, which has 73 CFM, 1.09 inwg (i think?) and 53.5 dbA noise. There are 7 stock fans for a total of...
I just got an ICX7250-24P, and as many have attested, it's too loud. I'm seeing ~65dB at start up that comes down to ~55dB steady state. At idle (only OOB MGMT interface active), I have the following stats:
