Just some closure. A third drive arrived, this time one from Teamgroup. After examining the pins and identifying the correct way to orient the drive, I chose this which was correct:
The Dell drives indeed had the labels on the wrong side. I am curious as to what they looked like installed...
Hopefully this prevents others from frying their hardware. I just ordered another drive that will arrive tomorrow. Will pay close attention to the pins and ignore the label.
Looks like I was supposed to install it "upside down" according to this picture in an Amazon review of my adapter, even though the review itself says not to install it upside down. Dell put the label on the wrong side (or the adapter is upside down) and the label should be facing down for this...
Well good news: the drive arrived.
Bad news: the adapter fried the second drive. I am not sure why this is:
I don't really want to risk buying yet another SATA SSD only to have it fail in the same way, but I'm not sure if I'll have any more luck with a different adapter either.
Just a little post migration data point. My dual e5-2680v2 + 256GB + dual 1100w R720xd pulled about 196 watts at idle according to the iDRAC. I just finished migrating all my services and drives over to my "new" R730xd with a single e5-2697v4, 2x32GB, and a single 750w PSU. I'm now only...
I'm thinking his motherboard allows the division of PCIe lanes equally between the two slots instead of 16x and 4x. Bifurcation would be getting multiple sets of lanes in one slot. (8x8x or 4x4x4x4x) in a 16x slot, for example.
The card he references has an onboard controller that then talks...

tl;dr: You can take a 100wh with you. Some planes are starting to come with USB-C PD ports which will make the...
If your BIOS supports x8 + x8, that card should work.
If you're not already, consider pooling your drives' capacity together with Drivepool or Storage Spaces. This will let you get the most mileage out of the space as you won't have to see where a game fits as long as your overall capacity is...
Good catch. I thought that was a label anomaly where it just didn't sit flush for some reason. I peeled back the label and can see the black component and the label is tinged brown around the edges which make me also think it's burned. I reached out to the seller.
I've been running this PCIe M.2 adapter in my R720xd with an NVME drive for about a year and a half now, no issues. I recently picked up an R730xd and one of these M.2 SATA SSDs to go in the other slot so I can boot from it using a SATA cable plugged into the motherboard. It is a different card...
I wouldn't bother with RAID for boot, but maybe that's just my bad experience 20 years ago where I had a failure that I couldn't recover from. I would back up the OS drive separately and test the backup procedure to ensure you can do it when the time comes. I find this better since I often...
For me, DIY was a big price hurdle for an all in one. I would have been into it for close to $1k. Maybe I could have scratched by for $800. The R730xd was $200, and I'll have maybe another $100 into it, getting all the bells and whistles I need since I'll bring drive caddies and rails over...
Cool project. In case anyone is wondering, there are more pictures on the link @ Maker World.
What's the total outlay for one of these? It looks like:
2x PCB: $54
4x fans: $60 + s/h
2x rack ears: $6 + $10 shipping = $16
Assorted hardware: $10
Filament: $5
TOTAL $145
If you're building...
I've seen nothing in the manual to indicate this is a possibility. The single proc systems ship without the extra riser card, and instead have a plate in the rear where the slots would be. They also come with a slightly different CPU cover for the empty socket.
Yes, there are two slots available with a single proc which will be all I need. I'll put the existing NVMe/SATA card in the x8 slot and the x16 slot will get the 4x4x4x4 card at some point.
Well I ordered an R730xd yesterday. I'll toss a single e5-2697v4 in it and 32-64GB. This is technically a bit less compute power than I have now with my dual e5-2680v2 / 256GB R720xd, but it'll still be plenty for what I'm running, and it should drink a bit less power at idle while having...
I really don't need all those bays. I can probably get by with the shorter slots, but full height would be better. Suggestions on a traditional 4U case with fewer bays?
