4tb nvme kc3000, cables - i8, lsi9600 and that adapter can only fit i8 cable, no molex to sata - just straight sata from psu.
Still does anybody know anything about highpoint x16 cards being used in x8 ports ?
@mattventura thanks for the hint with the adapter ! I will investigate is (ie, try to track it down here in uk -> buy it -> test it) and see where it get's me.
Meanwhile, I hear your point about slow down. After posting this, I found some posts here about highpoint and found on their website...
Hi,
Maybe I've boxed my self into the corner, I'm trying to create a simple storage solution where I take multiple M.2 drives, and connect those to LSI controller. I've tried 9500-i16 and 9600-24i and on both drives are not discovered. Yes I've used some cheapo M.2 NVME to SFF8654 8i Converters...
Dude, my original problems with ms-01 were so bad that I've had a PDU that can ping specific nodes and if those fail to respond - those will get a hard reboot. Then on HASS I there was a proxmox extension that would monitor the nodes and if something was indicating that there was something wrong...
So, if anybody reads this thread:
most of my crashes ended when I:
- upgraded bios to newest version
- replaced cpu paste on all the units.
- replaced one unit where CPU was faulty (or something else, but since you can only replace the ram then the unit went for RMA
- replaced 96gb crucial ram...
I watched the minisforum website like a hawk for half a year with no upgrades to bios - I've even reflashed all the units with 1.22 early on. Unfortunately I had to get on with things and I've implemented somehow fool proof watchdog and it keept me running on that cluster. I've stumbled on this...
Can you please let us know, how the stability worked out over a LONG time for you ?
I have "a few" ms01 in cluster and "patched" the reboot/crash issues with a rather complex watchdog and a PDU that power cycles the node if there is something fishy going on with it. All the nodes were on 1.22...
I know, that it just an example, with better cage I could just go down the route of 8 lane 9500-8e and let the expander mux the IO internally and I'm golden :D
Hey @nexox here is something crazy :)
No need to 3d print, 12V only supply ... I might have found my solution :D
Edit:
Word of advice, just don't look on ALL OF ebay for "expander cage" if you don't want to need to reset your brain.
Quite ;) But thanks a lot for that link mate !
(for any future readers that might be interested, that link was a listing for SuperMicro BPN-SAS3-216EB 24 Bay SAS SATA Backplane BPN-SAS3-216EL1)
@nexox actually, the thing I've done it the past was to buy bunch on backplanes, design a simple chassis and 3d printed it. Trick is to print in ABS since it has higher melting point, and this setup was perfect for me for now maybe 7 years ? (geez time flies). But I was considering an upgrade...
Hey, while we're on the subject - any thread listing some active backplanes that can do line multiplication ? ie plug 4 lanes and have it serving more than 4 disks ?
Yeah, not intending to run anything long, but sata outside of the case would be just eaten alive with the surrounding noise.
Anyway, again, thanks for the info about the 9400 etc.
About the broadcom, man where do I begin. I worked with a guy that for last 10 years work from Broadcom and...
Trust me it will :) I can even show you few zfs pools spinning right now on sas -> passive backplane -> sata disks :) But I don't want to argue about this thing here, what I appreciate is the info about the 3008, because at this moment I was looking at 9500-16e, since those have pretty small...
Technically it's going to be a sas backplane, and yes it will consume more power. My concern is power INSIDE of the sff - I just don't want to go down the road of extra cooling in the box ( like some people going with melanox6 and jet engine trying to cool it :D )
