Bought an AP650 today play around with. I added it to the free tier to update the firmware. Poked around the options a bit but it's a bit convoluted for home use... not a huge surprise... Connecting via SSH went smoothly, was able to apply a reasonable config and everything works well...

Not sure why but my backplane doesn't seem to work with any SAS (DA0S2GTH8B0, LSI SAS2008, onboard SAS/SCU ports). It works with the onboard SATA ports. Edit: I just read through your posts again, are you saying the backplane is the issue? It only works with SATA?

Just FYI, you can't mail anything in a standard envelope that isn't flat as it's non-machinable. They'll send it back (likely crushed by the machine). Ask me how I know... First Class Package (now Ground Advantage) is your best bet but it will be >= $4 iirc.

I wonder if someone could design a board w/ a microcontroller that measure the high/low voltage and converts it to PWM duty cycle. If something like that doesn't exist already...

Curious what came of this. I can get quiet enough fans but the coil whine is killing me.

I tried ARCTIC S4028-6K, fans report failed as expected but more interestingly, when they throttle down the board (not the fans) makes an annoying squealing sound (coil whine) :/ Sunon HA40201V4-D000-C99 cause the same board squeal.

I would try flashing it with DOS. Just be very careful, do it from a physical monitor and keyboard, not via the remote console. Yikes, that looks bad. I could sell you my Nidec fans if you want. Fair warning, rootwyrm has informed me that any such fans ordered from eBay, AliExpress, Amazon, etc. are certainly counterfeit. The only way to get genuine is order them from an actual distributor (DigiKey, Mouser, Arrow, etc.)...

Pictured are the Arctic fans in my server. I bought these rubber grommets since the OEM ones seemed to be close to wearing out and I didn't want to break them. They work, but you have to cut the tips off after installing them and jam them into the slot.
