I thought I would update on my experience of the CWWK N100 4 LAN that I purchased back in May 2023 to act as a home router/firewall and general home lab. I followed the great advice in this thread regarding BIOS settings (my original post is on page 5 of 150!!) and also applied new thermal paste...
Sadly not, its now in use and don't want to take down my network! If I had to guess from memory I would say about 5mm. Maybe @Loaky can measure it the thickness?
I also ordered direct from CWWK and received variation B, but that's what I expected based on the pictures on their website. I think CWWK on AliExpress has variation C as well.
Just FYI about the thermal paste, at least in my case the reason there was so much of it is because when you remove it...
I installed the thermal pad (cut to size) between the case and the copper block, and thermal paste between the cpu and the copper block. I'm confident they now make contact, I think there is a tiny bit of bend in the motherboard when screwed down. I ran passmark and watching the core temps with...
Actually another option is a thermal pad to bridge the gap. I've ordered an Arctic TP-2 50x50x0.5mm. I think putting it between the copper block and the case makes most sense? Then thermal paste between the CPU and the the copper block. If there is still a gap I can then put another layer...
Idle temps were fine, around 35, but I was seeing spikes up to 65-70 when running passmark. I decided to get some new thermal paste and after I applied it, I could see the gap between the processor and the copper block... I filled it with more thermal paste for now but that is clearly sub...
I plan to use one for WAN, two to connect to the switch in a LAG, and the last one will be the LAN for Proxmox and any other VMs. For the WAN and LAG ports I will use PCIe passthrough to the opnsense VM.
It arrived this morning via Yanwen and then Royal Mail. Not bad considering last week there were holidays in China. I've installed the 16GB stick and 500GB NVME drive and it boots up. I don't think I'll bother with replacing the thermal compound for now. I'll check temps once I've got it up and...
Could it be that using more memory than supported by the CPU causes this? It would seem unlikely, but who knows! I've ordered the same RAM but a 16GB module (CT16G48C40S5) to put in my CWWK N100. When it gets here in 2 to 3 weeks I can run the same tests.
Thanks, I'll keep that in mind when I get round to setting up the VPN. The manual setup for clients without a QR code does sound annoying. I assume you wont use docker to run Wireguard on Proxmox, so you'll set up a VM/container running a linux distro and the wireguard service itself (eg not...
Thanks, I'm sure I'll be reaching out once I have the box. They estimated 10-15 days.
Out of interest, based on the research I've done so far I thought I could run a WireGuard server/plugin directly in OPNsense. What is your reasoning for running it on a separate VM?
Hi all,
First time poster here. Been thinking of changing my home network for a while. Initially it was when thinking about installing an IP CCTV system on its own network etc (Which I haven't done yet), then when we had FTTP internet installed (500mb), but deep down I think I just want to...
