I have a similar setup, 48 cores, 2.1TB total memory, 4x512GB octane dimms - If I recall correctly 1-2 TPS on generation, depending on the model. Something like Qwen3.5 or Nemotron 3 might be much faster though, due to them having lower active params and some other fancy tricks.

Sorry not sure on the BIOS or CPU - it's not setup right now. I do recall with my motherboard I don't think it mattered. For the heatsink, I am using a noctua DH9 with a 4198 mount kit from them.

I have 2TB of Octane working on an Icelake ES CPU on an X12SPI-TF! Not sure about this motherboard. the X12 was very particular about which slots were octane and which were DDR4, there's a pattern in the manual.

This was a drive for a library, a pretty fancy IBM one. Also fiber channel, which for me was fine because randomly inherited a bunch of qlogic fc cards with a used Fujitsu sparc box. It seems in most cases you can “shuck” them. Only difference is no flap on the bay.

I have the 100gbe qsw-m7308r-4x next to my bed and it’s actually very silent. Ubiquiti has a fanless 10gbe switch too - not 12 ports though.

If you watch eBay sometimes you get super lucky - I got an LTO-8 drive that was brand new for 700! With 70$ 12TB tapes, and like 300$+ 12TB HDDs, I've broken even on the cost per gb after like 5 tapes - with the best prices per GB it's closer to like 10 tapes, but still, really nice if you can...

That's why PCIe is so cool compared to an actual "bus" like PCI - you get packetized switching and can share bandwidth really nicely. Shared buses like PCI can't by split and geared up/down in the same way. Too bad consumer PCIe switches are quite rare these days.
