Had more problems with Broadcoms, Mellanox and Intels in the last years than with realtek. Relly, a 8139 can destroy a reputation for decades. At least Suspend works under Linux with them. And the 2.5GB were never as buggy as the v225s
Passive DAC Cables have minimal power consumption. I have a 5m passive ubiquiti DAC cable in use. i dont know if you could get any longer ones, but 5m might be enough, they're a bit thicker tho

Ran into the same Problem: r8127 PCIe 3.0 x2 SFP Card not working with DAC OR any transceiver.
But the problem is fixed in linux 7.0...which isn't released yet. Had to download and compile the 7.0rc6 Kernel. Now the System runs fine and stable so far. Card works great.

Intel PRO 1000 is quite old! it would use the x4 width, but still run only with PCIe 1.1. It would never show LnkCap of 5GT/s

look which PCIe adress your card uses via plain "lspci".
e.g. 01:00.0 then use
lspci -s 01:00.0 -vv
LnkCap2 is what the card supports, LnkCap is the real speed right now.
And please insert a PCIe Gen 2 capable card into the PCIe Slot or mini-pcie socket.
I think the only onboard component using PCIe is the 1gbit Ethernet, and even that still uses PCIe Gen 1 if the editCMOS hack is used.

oh yeah, saw that card, which uses a singel PCIex1 3.0 interface. Ive got a similiar card for the minipcie slot. 2x Realtek 8125 behind a ASM PCIe Switch. i saw 2.1gbit/s NAT performance on that one. But still tight.
