I successfully use a Micron 9400 Max drive connected directly to slim-sas connector on a Asrock Rack romed6u-2l2t via Broadcom 05-60005-00 1 8x slim-sas -> 2 4x U.2 cable.

You could try to experiment with the NUMA (NPS) settings in the Epyc motherboard BIOS to see if that helps.
Or it could just be the difference in CPU clock speed, DDR type and clock speed.
Just the connectors are mini-SAS, slim-SAS, but the motherboard actually doesn't have a SAS controller to my knowledge, so you cannot connect SAS devices to those connectors.
I wonder who rips all these CPU's from the carrier and then reassemble them wrong or sell the carrier seperately?
I had a similiar issue, but luckily I send back the CPU because it was supposed to be new and came without a carrier frame.

@ano I would be interested to hear how the all nvme cluster compares to the all SAS SSD cluster.
Since ceph has currently some overhead, so that you don't reach that many iops on SSDs anyways. I saw they are working on a new osd called crimson, that is more taylored towards SSD's.
