    LSI 9300-8i, flaky boot handshake

I'm running FreeBSD 15.0. No other PCIe devices attached. Not using the M2 slot. The H97 that is working well just has the one PCI-e 3.0 x16 slot and no other slots. The Z97 with the issues has 2 PCI-e 3.0 slots that share bandwidth working at x8 if using both, plus a bunch of other PCI-e 1.0...

    LSI 9300-8i, flaky boot handshake

Further update. I switched over to an Asus H97 mini ITX motherboard that I had removed in favour of the Z97 for more SATA ports and a later spec. So far after 4 or 5 reboots I am getting no lane errors and full 8x speed handshake with the 9300-8i card. I had to force Gen3 in the BIOS otherwise...

    LSI 9300-8i, flaky boot handshake

Update on this. I bought an Inspur LSI-9207-8i hopeful that it was just an issue with the HBA card itself. Sad to report it is not. Although it seemed a bit more stable at first, it eventually dropped down to 2.5x speed. I tried moving it to a different PCIe slot in my mobo (which I had tried...

    LSI 9300-8i, flaky boot handshake

@BLinux Thanks for the reply. I think it said x4 lanes, but I'll have to brave a restart to know for sure. For a good handshake, pciconf outputs: link x8(x8) speed 8.0(8.0) Most of the time when the handshake is bad, I guess this would appear as: link x8(x4) speed 8.0(2.5) That said...

    LSI 9300-8i, flaky boot handshake

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I've reseated it many times. Also tried the card in the other PCI-E 3.0 slot. I cleaned the contacts, but with an eraser rather than isopropyl. When screwing the bracket down It does affect the card seating, but it's barely perceptible and I've gotten stable...

    LSI 9300-8i, flaky boot handshake

I have an Inspur branded 9300-8i which has an unreliable handshake at boot with my Asus Z97 motherboard. When it handshakes with no lane errors, I get full 8x speed and no issues even under heavy disk IO until rolling the dice at the next boot. It will run for weeks or months. Most of the...
