Hm...I might have posted too quickly. The drive did work for much longer than any other adapter card I tested (and I tested a few) but still...
Still not ruling out the adapter board, the ones I have is still a bit crap (I can only get crappy ones with next-day delivery)
Taking your advice, I ordered a dumb PCIe x4 -> U.2 card for debugging purposes. And it did indeed work. For the first time, I completed a run of CrystalDiskMark.
I will continue to investigate 2xU.2 cards (because I really do need two U.2 slots), but at least for now I can probably confirm...
How about U.3 adapter with a U.2 drive? e.g. this U.3 to PCIe Adapter Card For U.3 SSDs - Drive Adapters and Drive Converters | Hard Drive Accessories | StarTech.com Japan vs startech.com/en-jp/hdd/pex4sff8639
Thanks, but I need two U.2 due to PCIe slot limitations...If I use something like this I'd lose 4 lanes.
Looking at something like this

Hello, no this is not related to bifurication. Bifurication works. The SSD is recognised via both U.2 connectors on the card in the Bios, in Windows, and in a LiveCD Linux.
The discussion regarding the ASM1182 chip made go and have a close look at the (only) chip on that board.
Google says the ASM1182 looks like this, a square (more or less) chip
There's nothing on that board that is vaguely a square.
There's nothing on the back. The chip I circled is not...
Thanks for the replies @Tech Junky @Chriggel.
I did try to eliminate that problem by basically putting a 12cm fan spinning at 2000rpm blowing at the SSD directly. So it should not be a problem.
For what it's worth, the drive in HWiNFO64 reports 40-41C regardless what it's doing until it stops...
Thanks very much for the reply.
Yes I deliberately avoided SAS drives because I did not want to bother with an active card (HBA) for the drive. That and the comparatively slower speeds. The reason I went for that card that I have is also because of the U.2 connector on-board. I did not want to...
I am having trouble with a U.2 drive with a PCI-E adapter card, hoping someone can help me out.
