Minimal hardware for napp-it all-in-one -- final system configuration

" what are you using to access the VM's " I am not sure what you mean. I am accessing the VMs through their native methods -- ssh or VNC for the *nix machines, Remote Desktop for the Windows Server and Windows desktop VMs, etc. Also I have a web browser pointed at ESXi which allows me to...

Minimal hardware for napp-it all-in-one -- final system configuration

You're right I was being confusing. I am thinking of RAIDZ2 which does survive loss of 2 disks (in a 3-disk configuration).

Minimal hardware for napp-it all-in-one -- final system configuration

You're quite right, and my mistake goes deeper than a typo. I intended to have a configuration that would survive two disk failures - RAID-Z2 - and that is what I should have configured. So now I have twice the available space but not the redundancy I wanted. Thank you for pointing this out.

Minimal hardware for napp-it all-in-one -- final system configuration

My "cheap" ($850) mini-ITX Napp-it All-in-One system is now up and running. Since I asked for (and received) advice here in building the system I thought I would share the details of the build, and my candid thoughts on the results. Thanks to gea for his guidance and support. TBH some of the...

How to perform backups of ZFS pools/filesystems in napp-it

Is there any provision in napp-it to backup the ZFS filesystems to a NAS or rsync.net? Or do I need to script that myself?

    Minimal hardware for napp-it all-in-one?

Gea, I have built my napp-it AiO server (hardware), installed ESXi, and created the OmniOS VM using your template. I am having some trouble with the next step: passthrough of the SATA controller or disks. I want to try two options. In both cases I am booting from M.2 NVMe - that's where ESXi &...

    Minimal hardware for napp-it all-in-one?

gea thank you for your thorough response. I just want to clarify though: If I use a M.2 boot drive, could I use SATA or NVMe for all of my pool disks? I mean, can those both be passed through to the OmniOS VM?

    Minimal hardware for napp-it all-in-one?

I posted in a different thread: I have been running SmartOS on a SuperMicro motherboard for 6+ years, with spinning disks. I have decided I want to re-architect my ZFS/NAS solution using OmniOS and napp-it, and preferably AiO so I can put all my VMs on the same server and get local disk speed...

Need a NAS/SAN recommendation for my lab

Thank you gea, I think this is exactly what I will do. If in the future I need more horsepower for the VMs, I can simply add another virtualization host.

Need a NAS/SAN recommendation for my lab

Are you referring to napp-it all-in-one -- are you using a single server as a NAS and virtualization host? Do you recommend that solution? Is that configuration - and an OmniOS/napp-it standalone configuration - at risk of unrecoverable failure if the boot sector or the OmniOS image is corrupted?

Need a NAS/SAN recommendation for my lab

Wow that's an amazing price! I read through that thread and I think there were some legitimate criticisms of the risk and life expectancy of used drives, and extra effort in buying used, testing, and possibly returning them. I know I said I want affordable. I also want to get this done quickly...

Need a NAS/SAN recommendation for my lab

I'm trying to do this on a budget and currently my storage needs are less than 1/2 TB including all the snapshots. I think you're proposing a lot more hardware than I need. What could this be scaled down to? If I use a pair of mirrored SSDs what would be a reasonable amount of NVMe?

Need a NAS/SAN recommendation for my lab

gea Thank you for your thoughtful response. I remember napp-it, I think it's a terrific solution. I assume you're running ESXi on a separate server? Are you access the VMs using NFS? Of course performance would be dramatically improved if the NAS is also the virtualization host. But I prefer...

Need a NAS/SAN recommendation for my lab

Hi everyone. I used to keep up with the technology and what's the latest and greatest - but more importantly: what's been around long enough to be proven and stable and affordable. But I have not been keeping up lately and now I find I need to re-architect my lab setup. So I need some advice...
