Is ZFS really needed on SSD / NVMe devices?

Apologies I should have been more detailed, but it is half the problem with forums, conclusions go wild if you don't detail a post enough, or if you detail a post too much nobody bothers to read it fully and you still get wild conclusions... Anyway, the hardware raid is a raid 10 pool, the...

Is ZFS really needed on SSD / NVMe devices?

some background... I use a huge hardware-raid backup pool for backups (all 30tb nvme drives), roughly around 7GBytes per sec capability at peak (a limit defined by the network pipe, I just haven't got around to investigating the wonderful 400gbits+ switches and cards, frankly not needed for my...

IPMI dead after running update on Supermicro X10DRT-H

If a reflash don't work, then we're talking possibly a defective chip there.... I've seen this happen over the years not just supermicro, and the only fix is often a board swap or a chip replacement however shor above is right, for a quick fix you should be able to grab a replacement fairly easily.

Use Brocade ICX6400-EPS1500 / EPS400 as ATX PSU

Looks like one of the many monsters my team and I builtup a decade ago, though the ones we put together were filled with 6 x xeon-d industrial boards stacked in 2u cases, but had to go external power because site had a rack DC system already in place with generator switchover.

    Lenovo Tiny and Coral TPU

I can't say much about the M920q, but what I can say is that a single TPU worked for me in both a Tiny P350 (11700t) and a M9xq (11400t), however what I had was a mini-pci format TPU, which I then put into an A+E key adapter which I grounded down a bit around the edges with a dremel/file to make...

Use Brocade ICX6400-EPS1500 / EPS400 as ATX PSU

I personally haven't used them, however one of my 'hackaday' friends is (he has a 60 odd node farm). I popped him a quick email and he said that they're being used in massive open-frame mining for a while and have little chance of frying anything downstream if they are the smd variety...

    Intel Xeon vs AMD EPYC

I think the answer to that has many variables... Intel have some pretty unique propositions for certain industries with their accelerator options but then that may only account for single digits in market percentages. AMD hasn't kicked Intel in the nuts hard enough yet, Intel still has a very...

Use Brocade ICX6400-EPS1500 / EPS400 as ATX PSU

Edit: ah that was your plan too, strange I totally missed that message! , Anyway, yup exactly what I would try as a quick way. But my only concern would be, if these are production servers, then I would personally invest in proper certified supplies, for insurance purposes primarily as using...

Use Brocade ICX6400-EPS1500 / EPS400 as ATX PSU

A lot of work, and these are a fairly old design compared to today's tech, but still a great fun project if you have the spare time to play around, totally love retro gear reuse where it makes sense.

Building a server based on an AMD 5950X slammed into a Supermicro 2U chassis

...ain't it just a great feeling when a bunch of goodies all turn up at once, and earlier than expected at that too :) still a few more things to arrive, hopefully by midweek all should be here and I get to do a lot of actual testing, no theories here whatsoever, I'm as practical as they come.

Building a server based on an AMD 5950X slammed into a Supermicro 2U chassis

I stand corrected, looks like MSI have improved and are doing a reputable job there keeping such an old board updated. Yes, I am in the exact same boat as you with purchasing, it isn't a matter of being able to afford it, hell, I could buy pretty much anything I really wanted. It is purely...

AMD EPYC 9965 Turin - group buy?

Yeah, but look on the positive side, it does bring people back to the forums :D - these forums hate being stuck in the perpetual state of being just a shopping coupons outlet.... maybe thats why so many of the other forums out there have grown so big with massive audiences because they attract a...

Building a server based on an AMD 5950X slammed into a Supermicro 2U chassis

When I say 'demand' I mean numbers, even with gen 3 switches, they've got bucket loads just waiting in storage to sell, not kidding, that much I do know because a couple years back I was in talks with a supplier regarding making some alterations and was told that the runs were big, and they just...

Building a server based on an AMD 5950X slammed into a Supermicro 2U chassis

Naaa, I disagree. Gigabyte and MSI are the worst at firmware upgrades, fixes, and especially ongoing support after end-of-life... Give me an Asus mid-to-pro board model that got left behind too early?

Building a server based on an AMD 5950X slammed into a Supermicro 2U chassis

Yes no one is into that anymore, but the system will never change now, there are far greater powers at work, and everything we see and hear through media is all misdirection. Corporations have changed the way they operate, there is no going back, grab what you can while you can, 10 years from...

Building a server based on an AMD 5950X slammed into a Supermicro 2U chassis

I agree, problems across the spectrum of brands. No different I guess to the days of spinners, some swear by Western Digital, others Seagate, personally was stung by both across the decades. Most reliable spinners I ever had were the old black Fujitsu 2gb ide drives lol The good thing with...

Building a server based on an AMD 5950X slammed into a Supermicro 2U chassis

Advice for others who are planning on using pcie switches, one thing to note is that if you're looking at 100G+ RDMA across fancy sub microsecond ported ethernet switches, don't put the nic on a pcie-switch, that is one thing I will always directly connect to CPU lanes, also some cards don't...

AMD EPYC 9965 Turin - group buy?

Yeah, that's the joke. It is either a typo, or my mate Dave was right all along and it is the chinese afterall who are the true goats of scalping....
