Brocade ICX Series (cheap & powerful 10gbE/40gbE switching)

In the brocade lineup, what is the lowest noise stock or easily fan swapped switch that can run 40 or possibly even higher? I have an ICX 6610 and while a great switch it is pretty loud.

Mellanox Switches - Tips & Tricks

40/56 is the roll imo for the price. Cheap cards and switches. QSFP DAC are a bit fat routing in a rack but that's the biggest downside. 25 is overrated and you can hit 32 easy no tweaks which also makes 25 a bit underperforming for its premium price.

    Intel Optane 905P 1.5TB on sale $299

I like using my 900's for VM host boot/os drives. Really snappy VM OS performance.

Daily Power On/Off Supermicro H12SSL-I in Workstation Mode

Totally fine to turn it off and on daily. I attempted to use my h12 as a workstation for a while but with a 7302p and was not pleased at performance. What CPU are you using and what RAM speed? Did you populate all dimms? Did you get the fans under control?

Help me decide on homelab upgrades

If you want gen4 PCIe lanes, which seems prudent at this time, check into Rome CPUs, not Naples. A lot of decent Rome chips exist at cheap prices now and 32 cores is a lot of horsepower still.

    [Update: Seller Complaints Accumulating] HGST Ultrastar He10 - 10TB @ $129.95

SAS drives often do not have a full ATA cmd set present. You are not alone. I run badblock and check for defect growth and call it a day.

    AMD EPYC 7302p+ Supermicro H11SSL-i version 2

I know if one such fraud issue already that happened to a friend. These sellers are bad news. They somehow change shipping address to ship to "wrong address" something, likely not a motherboard/cpu, then make you fight for refund. Love my Tugg H12, great seller pushing the real price low for us.

How do you guys feel about BIOS updates?

I've seen some pronounced bios impacts on systems in the past that did have me rethink always updating every machine. Now I do update every system that runs a container/VM or baremetal that will be WAN facing. I also don't run systems that have out of date bios bits in those roles any longer...

    Mellanox SX6036, Rail Kit

It's incredibly hard to saturate 100gbe connections with single stream eth based traffic. 25gbe is rather expensive. 10gbe is not fast enough. 40gbe is still a really sweet spot on performance/price.

    Inspur-branded LSI9300-8i for $50

Physically these have a much smaller heatsink size and get super hot. You need forced airflow outside of a server chassis imo to not thermal/melt these. Surprised how small this heatsink is vs the very-much-pita Dell 9300's I have. Mine are luckily all in servers and still very hot to touch...

Migrate from TrueNAS Core to XigmaNAS?

As a storage platform provider, both scale and core are exceptionally stable platforms. I don't use them for VM or containers however and have had issues with VM deployments off both scale and core. I typically pair up with proxmox for that segment of the work however so not a big issue in my...

Upgrade Existing Win 2019 Std License + CALs to 2022?

If you read that actual linked post that person linked it doesn't say that you can upgrade free at all, and no you cannot upgrade free unless you have an active Software Assurance on your current version as that provides upgrade rights. It also costs a lot more vs a standard license. For...

Migrate from TrueNAS Core to XigmaNAS?

Freebsd ZFS performance of Core has always been exceptionally better given the same pool/dataset vs scale. I've noticed that in my comparisons and thought about just going base freebsd but I'm pretty new to freebsd. Comfortable with a CLI, but don't want to FAFO with my storage arrays. Ended up...

    [WTB][US-TX] SAS3 SSDs lot of 16+

Found myself looking on eBay, but thought why not post here first. Looking for 16+ SAS3 ssds, preferring 1.6+ TB ea but open to lower density. Bonus if Dell. Caddies not needed.

Migrate from TrueNAS Core to XigmaNAS?

Yes export them and import via the cli with those cmds will generally work. Do run a snapshot first. What version of openzfs is running in core and xigma is a decent point to evaluate before migrate.
