New Motherboard - ASUS Pro WS B850M-ACE SE

I ended up buying the ASUS Proart X670E Creator Wifi and LSI 9500-8i card + SlimSAS to 8 SATA port cable (~7W during use). This had the best overall quantity and config of PCI slots/lanes and SATA and m.2 ports. It also avoided many unnecessary features (overkill VRMs, RGB controllers, etc.)...

New Motherboard - ASUS Pro WS B850M-ACE SE

Fair...I'd have to recheck, but I thought the AM5 was a better performer overall for my use case - that is, overall performance while trying to keep 'idle' power usage constrained. Technically, I could port all my current gear (sans CPU and maybe cooler) to an Intel platform. Might you have any...

New Motherboard - ASUS Pro WS B850M-ACE SE

True  .. I'm just trying to reduce power use/heat and keep that 1 remaining PCI free (for future expansion).

New Motherboard - ASUS Pro WS B850M-ACE SE

Yea... it's quite annoying/disappointing! For me, it's rendered the ASUS Pro B850-ACE SE a little questionable as a NAS option. Only reliable way to 6 SATA is to use an HBA card (or m.2 sata adapter, with many concerning reports). Might pause the ASUS order and do more research.

New Motherboard - ASUS Pro WS B850M-ACE SE

True.. which I'm trying to avoid due to extra power use, heat, cost... but if unavoidable, then opens up a bunch of other motherboard options I'd previously discarded. Might be back to picking the ASRock Rack B650D4U-2L2T.

New Motherboard - ASUS Pro WS B850M-ACE SE

Thanks... damn. This could be problematic. I need 7 sata ports: 6x hdd [raidz2 data pool] 1x ssd [TrueNAS OS/boot disk] (this could be any cheap boot storage) plus 2x nvme [RAID1 for apps/containers/caching]

New Motherboard - ASUS Pro WS B850M-ACE SE

Can anyone recommend the correct MCIO (to 4x SATA) cable for the ASUS Pro WS B850M-ACE SE. I have seen a few like this (AoQhir SlimSAS 8654 MCIO 4i 38P to 4 x SATA Cable – PCIe 5.0 Server 12G High-Speed Data Cable (19.68, Inches) : Amazon.com.au: Computers) but I'm clear if 'SlimSAS 8654 MCIO 4i...

New Motherboard - ASUS Pro WS B850M-ACE SE

Thanks @splifingate The Asus only has 2 pcie slots, (1 free after gpu), so I guess I need to think what else I'll need to plug in. Thankfully, most things seem covered though - 10gbe, 8 sata ports (4 from MCIO), IPMI. The only real "gotcha" might be that a wider GPU (5090)would cover that...

Sure. Will do. Hah. Sounds (no pun) like a great use for it!

New Motherboard - ASUS Pro WS B850M-ACE SE

Just saw that. Thanks. That Milan chip is great! And would have a heap of memory BW for AI tasks (if that's your thing... which might be the case given your RTX 4000 ADA). Haha! Aren't we all? If I could afford ~120TB in SSDs, I would! Based on this, I might try that ASUS board. I already have...

New Motherboard - ASUS Pro WS B850M-ACE SE

Really appreciate all this advice and the power info! 150w is really good! What model is your Epyc ..and how many spinning HDDs (if any) do you have? I believe I also started with slightly different goals (before ruling out Milan CPU), as I wanted to play the occasional FPS game (eg: RDR2) in a...

New Motherboard - ASUS Pro WS B850M-ACE SE

That's quite the mission you went on! Thankfully this won't be in a bedroom, but a cupboard near a living area.. so it has to be 'quiet enough', but not silent. Tbf, I don't expect I'll have to manage the system via IPMI/BMC very often once setup, so I might be overstating the IPMI's...

New Motherboard - ASUS Pro WS B850M-ACE SE

Very helpful. Thanks. Supermicro: I assume the noise would be based on my HSF (Thermalright PS120), which is quiet enough -- unless I missed something? The crippled BMC is criminal! I forgot to list it in my post, but did notice it mentioned earlier. Asus: Does the IPMI/BMC give you full...

New Motherboard - ASUS Pro WS B850M-ACE SE

    I've been researching these boards (B650D4U-2L2T, H13SAE-MF, WS B850M-ACE SE Pro, Gigabyte MC13-LE0) for my homelab/NAS server to pair with my Ryzen 9 7950x (or a Ryzen 7 9700x) 4x 24GB G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo (6400) RTX 4000 ADA SFF 20GB 2x 2TB NVMe 5x WD Red Pro 22TB HDDs. I realise 4 DIMMs...

    CWWK i5-1235U 6 port i226 report

Very interesting. Thanks. I'm now considering offloading many of my management/critical dockers (HA, guac, uptimekuma, pfsense(+HAProxy)) onto the P8505 box and leaving the NAS to run the more intensive/experimental/entertainment stuff: Plex/Jellyfin, RSync, FTP/p2p, *arrs, Frigate, LLM, etc.

    CWWK i5-1235U 6 port i226 report

Good info. I've got a Samsung 980 500GB NVMe (300TBW), so it's decent but not enterprise level. I'll see if I can find a way to setup proxmox/etc to use RAM as much as possible, and minimise writes to disk. Thanks again.

    CWWK i5-1235U 6 port i226 report

Thanks for the prompt reply. That's exactly what I'm wanting to hear! Was it hard to setup? I'm assuming I just following the instructions on the website? Is there anything you'd do different, if you were installing again from scratch?

    CWWK i5-1235U 6 port i226 report

Can anyone tell me what's the most stable/best hypervisor to run on these boxes currently? My preference is for "stability, reliability, security and (device) compatibility" over bleeding edge performance. I've been running pfsense (baremetal) on my Pentium 8505 box and it's been rock solid, but...

Ruckus Wireless as an Unifi alternative?

As always.. thanks for the useful info! I have reverted the country and root, but never applied the ECDSA patch in the first place. I was wondering however, as I use Putty on Win10, I never used ssh -oHostKeyAlgorithms=+ssh-rsa . I simply logged in via the putty gui and clicked YES to the...

Ruckus Wireless as an Unifi alternative?

So my 730 on Solo seemed to run fine for 6 days straight - although it's hard to confirm the absence of kernel panics as solo's logs are very limited (duration and quality). The uptime reached 6 days however, whereas unleashed would panic and reboot, resetting the uptime. I just installed an...
