CWWK/Topton/ N95/N100/N200/N305 quad NIC router 5 BIOS-error-beeps and black screen error

As mentioned it only officially supports 16Gb so you take a chance on it working. Just because some companies BIOS has been lucky enough for it to work doesn't mean they all will.

What did you choose N100 if you needed 32Gb?

Without airflow a heatsink will do very little. At the very least ensure the cover is removed if there is one otherwise a fan is required.

Definitely worth it and you will not know what size shim you need or if it just needs repasting until you take it apart ;) The shims are one way, another is reducing the height of the standoffs which seems to be the obvious choice to me. It would likely only require a few strokes with a file.

If you don't have a way of replacing the air e.g. a fan, you are basically creating an oven. Remove the bottom cover an use a fan then no heatsinks are required.

    pi-hole + opnsense + vpn on a single machine?

What is the point of running a nested VM host when you can run up a tiny CM in Proxmox for this?

I create the VLANs in OPNSense. If you want an extra LAN and completely segregate you can also do this but it isn't virtual ;) I have my LAN and a VLAN with an SSID on each with OPNSense providing DHCP for both. It is pretty easy on Unifi at least to do this. What is up with the one you have...

    pi-hole + opnsense + vpn on a single machine?

As important in my opinion is having some redundancy as all the backups/snapshots in the world will not help you if you have nothing to restore onto. This could be another VM or baremetal install that will get you back online when disaster strikes and there are some very cost effective options...

In my experience it doesn't work like you think it does. There is a mobo in between the top where the CPU heat is dispersed by the top plate and fins and the underside where the RAM and SSD are. The internal temps will rise very quick which is why it is better to remove the bottom cover and have...

How will that help with RAM cooling? I would leave that bottom cover off to prevent building an oven ;) The N100 hardly gets warm for me so I don't think it would benefit TBH. If you are running the CPU at a high load then some active cooling would work assuming the heat spreader has good contact.

I'm not sure how sensitive these are to voltage but the supplied one is 12v. You can try powering it using the green screw terminals (top left on your image) to test with a high current 12V supply if you have one.

I think the N305 is too much unless you want to use some intensive plugins for IDS for example but that being said is not so power hungry to be an unreasonable choice. There's not so much known about the long term reliability of these devices or the PSUs yet but worth considering. I use a small...

    CWWK/Topton/... Nxxx quad NIC router

The N305 is a good choice if you want to run your router as a VM (and some other VM/CMs) or need the CPU power for intensive plugins. For baremetal it will be way overpowered and use a bit more energy but give some room for expansion. An N100 is running my 1gbit up/down connection in Proxmox...

    pi-hole + opnsense + vpn on a single machine?

I run OPNSense as a VM and some smaller separate containers alongside - PiHole, OpenVPN, Adguard etc. My N100 with 16Gb RAM rarely sees double-digit CPU use. The m920s will be fine having much better hardware e.g more cores and RAM support.

I would remove any covers and see how you go. A heatsink will help but if the hot air has no way of escaping it will not improve so much. There is no reason I can see not to remove the front, rear and bottom cover. I see people worrying about dust but without a fan these are not going to...
