So mines were in a HighPoint SSD6540 enclosure that would have generated an alert if the temperature broke 65 C and it never did. In fact the current replacement array in it is only 30 C (granted they are different manufacturer).
I’m more annoyed that they failed the way they did more than anything as luckily all I had on it at that point was just my steam library and other things that were very easy to reproduce so absolutely no data loss. I was prepared for it given that it was a RAID0 but even then I expected 1 maybe...
I had a RAID0 of 4 of them and 3 of them failed at the same time which was odd. The 4th is still working perfectly though. Weird thing is that I was able to upgrade the firmware on some of the failed ones but it did not help.
For questions 2-4 it's a yes. For question 5, SAS2 is the answer but only SATA II as well and not SATA III.
Just out of curiosity what are you planning to do regarding cooling as that is not a particularly quiet model.
Didn't read the whole thread thoroughly so sorry if someone else mentioned it, but have you considered virtualizing the firewall and using the hypervisor's power saving features? I have my Sophos virtualized with no issues.
Also have you tried to reapply the thermal compound/TIM?
