You could try having a low power desktop system, like a NUC or so and just power on the server when you need to. You just won't get below a certain threshold let's say 80W, so it might be better to look at your resource requirements and splitting that up into groups to most efficient workload...

If you are poor, everything has utility even the mesh shopping trolley from the grocery store can be used as a barbecue grill... This is e-waste though. As said above, sell for parts (if your time isn't worth much/have a lot of time) and donate/recycle what you can't use. :)

I used the available buyer protection. Which is that if within two weeks you didn't get the items exactly as described (eg. seller sends you a brick and has a real tracking number), you get your money back. For me this makes it safe. Not sure if there is a way to game this system.
