    Alternative to Minisforum MS-01?

Hey, just wanted to follow up. I did end up getting a (new, top-spec) Lenovo M90q, loaded it up with RAM, and got a X520 with appropriate PCIe riser and fan shroud from @WarlockSyno (who was extremely generous with his time and advice!). It has been absolutely rock-solid in every way. Spent a...

High idle CPU temps on i7-14700K in a Silverstone CS381

I'd meant to return to this thread with an update! One which I still don't understand. After running Proxmox for a month, I got too frustrated with it to continue; I was getting frequent crashes, and there were many things I didn't like about it. So I decided to install TrueNAS SCALE on the...

Minisforum MS-01 PCIe Card and RAM Compatibility Thread

Huh, this is upsetting to hear. Is this a Proxmox issue, or an MS-01 issue? I plan to use this to run servers on Proxmox, and I'm used to servers having uptime measured in years. The idea of celebrating a 15-day uptime cycle is concerning.

Minisforum MS-01 PCIe Card and RAM Compatibility Thread

Oh, thanks. Found that thread now. So I guess I have to at least hook stuff up for the initial setup. I think I'd also use a separate IP for management (it's what I do now for IPMI on my other Proxmox server). I don't plan on using this for any extensive management, just to do basic stuff if...

Minisforum MS-01 PCIe Card and RAM Compatibility Thread

Hi. I'm considering getting an MS-01, and I hope it's not hijacking to ask this question here, which seems to be the main place on STH for MS-01 issues. Basically: I'll be using this as a Proxmox server only, and I have no need to attach a monitor and keyboard to it. But I've never used vPro...

High idle CPU temps on i7-14700K in a Silverstone CS381

Yeah, it's not ideal, but in this case I wanted Intel with an iGPU with Quick Sync, for Plex transcoding, and it also had to support ECC RAM, so there weren't many options. I certainly don't need that much speed, but it felt like the power requirements were all the same and a few extra dollars...

High idle CPU temps on i7-14700K in a Silverstone CS381

I've recently finished a new build, with an Intel i7-14700K CPU, an ASRock Rack W680D4U-2L2T motherboard (which STH reviewed here), and a Silverstone CS381 case (which STH reviewed here). It's running Proxmox, with a main function being a virtualized TrueNAS Scale, and a bunch of other VMs...

ASRock W680D4U: where to plug CPU fan?

In case anyone else finds this thread with the same question: I sent a tech-support request, and after a few days they replied to say that you should use FAN4 for the CPU. (That is, in fact, the header that's closest to the CPU, and it's on its own, rather than stacked with other fan headers.)

ASRock W680D4U: where to plug CPU fan?

This may be a stupid question, but I'm not an expert builder, so: I'm working on a new build with an ASRock Rack W680D4U-2L2T motherboard, and I don't know where to plug in the CPU fan. I've read over the manual very carefully, and looked closely at the diagram, and there are 7 fan headers (in...

Basic advice for fiber in the home?

Thanks for these suggestions. I won't be running the cable myself, I'll get a guy to do it, I just need to know what to tell him. Two of the runs will be fairly easy (along baseboards); there's one place where there's an existing conduit, and we have to figure out whether it'll be possible to...

Basic advice for fiber in the home?

I've been planning on upgrading my home network to 10GbE for a while, with Mikrotik hardware. Nothing will be particularly complicated; I'll need two or three runs of cable that will be 10–20m at most, a couple of very short runs of patch cable, and I think three switches. My assumption is that...

Compatible memory for ASRock Rack W680D4U-2L2T?

Yes, same idea! I'll probably go for one of the new i7 models; I don't need that much more power but it seems a reasonable investment in future-proofing it; the comparable Xeons, as you say, are twice the price and have the same number of cores, same number of PCIe lanes, etc. I'm glad to hear...

Compatible memory for ASRock Rack W680D4U-2L2T?

No, I'm aware of that. Can I ask what CPU you're using in your setup? I'm leaning towards a consumer CPU rather than a Xeon or the like, which doesn't seem like it would add much (other than cost) to the project.

Compatible memory for ASRock Rack W680D4U-2L2T?

Ah, OK. I didn't know if memory worked that way. Whew.

Compatible memory for ASRock Rack W680D4U-2L2T?

I can't tell if the specs don't make sense, or if I'm just too stupid to understand them.... I'm planning a new mATX build, and have been looking pretty hard at the ASRock Rack W680D4U-2L2T motherboard; it has pretty much everything I think I want. But I just started looking at the memory...

    Server "closet" in small apartment?

(I know this isn't strictly a "chassis" question, but this subforum seemed the best option.) I live in a typically smallish apartment in New York, and thus need to fit my gear in the small amount of semi-public space that I have; I can't put anything in an attic, basement, extra closet, etc...

    Mini PC with IPMI?

OK, I was too embarrassed to ask originally, but now: Is there a place where this functionality is explained clearly? The use case is that I want to plug this thing in to my network with an RJ45 jack, without an OS and without a monitor/keyboard attached (but with access to the box, so I can...

    Mini PC with IPMI?

Huh, learn something every day! Thanks.

    Mini PC with IPMI?

I don't need more RAM, but that doesn't seem to have an IPMI port? I only see one RJ45 jack in the picture. Even on eBay, the NUCs with vPro (at least the few I'm seeing with a search) are a fair amount of money.

    Mini PC with IPMI?

I think this will end up not working out for me; I didn't realize that IPMI would vault this into the "serious" category (I _certainly_ don't need ECC for this!). I was imagining there would be some $200 Beelink kind of thing with an IPMI option. If it's going to be $1000, I'll just have to live...
