For questions 2-4 it's a yes. For question 5, SAS2 is the answer but only SATA II as well and not SATA III.
Just out of curiosity what are you planning to do regarding cooling as that is not a particularly quiet model.
Didn't read the whole thread thoroughly so sorry if someone else mentioned it, but have you considered virtualizing the firewall and using the hypervisor's power saving features? I have my Sophos virtualized with no issues.
Also have you tried to reapply the thermal compound/TIM?
When you get a chance can you post the power consumption if you can measure it, the sound (if it's reasonable for a homelab), and processor (and revision if possible if it's an x86 Atom).
I wonder if this is the x86 or PPC version as it looks like there was 2 variants according to http://productline.inventec.com/switch/Download/D7032Q28B.pdf
Can you compare it to any other equipment as an example? Any things to watch out for with them? Were you able to track down any firmware updates for them?
